Anthony Polito, the main suspect in the Las Vegas shooting, is reported to have legally purchased a handgun and over 150 rounds of ammunition.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed in a media briefing that the 67-year-old suspect arrived at UNLV's campus with 11 magazines in addition to nine loaded magazines. It is unclear at this time how many rounds were fired during the tragic event.
Polito, who was a former college professor, was killed in a shootout with police approximately 10 minutes after the UNLV shootings occurred.
UNLV Suspect Legally Purchased Handgun & Ammo
Polito was also in possession of a Taurus 9 mm handgun, which he purchased legally last year, police confirmed.
Three UNLV professors were killed in the shooting. A fourth victim, who has been identified as a 38-year-old visiting professor, is currently being hospitalized for life-threatening injuries.
Days leading up to the tragic event, the 67-year-old suspect isreported to have published a 16-page document referencing the 22 letters that he sent “to various University personnel across the country.”
The headline of the document read “!!! CONTENT OF ENVELOPES !!!” and included what “appeared to be personal letters to educators across the country and the alleged shooter’s opinion on the current state of higher education,” per 8NewsNow. “Polito appears to name 20 educators in the document — some of those named seem to be previous coworkers, while others appear to be from institutions that rejected Polito’s employment,” the report continued.
One of the notes was addressed to a former UNLV president, according to the news outlet.
Polito concluded the document with his dissatisfaction with the current state of the education system, claiming that the faculty are “no longer hired on merit” but are hired if they will “go along” and “turn a blind eye.”
A specific motive for the UNLV shooting is still under investigation.
Maine Mass Shooter Legally Purchased Guns
These reports come just weeks after Robert Card, the main suspect in the mass shootings that occurred in Lewiston, Maine, was able to legally purchase firearms after being committed to a mental hospital involuntarily.
The 40-year-old army veteran reportedly stated he was hearing voices, and had allegedly threatened to shoot up the National Guard base in Saco, which is when he was sent to a mental hospital. Following his time in the hospital, Card’s superiors were told that he should not handle any weapons or participate in live-fire activities.
However, Mr. Card still purchased the weapons legally.
President Biden Calls For Gun Reform After Maine Mass Shooting
Following the Maine mass shooting, President Joe Biden called for gun reform, stating that we shouldn’t be worried if we “go to a bowling alley about getting shot and killed."
Biden then called on Republicans to “fulfill their obligation to keep the American people safe,” but “until that day comes, I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic.”
He added, “The Lewiston community – and all Americans – deserve nothing less.”
President Joe Biden also privately met with students at the University of Nevada Las Vegas after the tragic shootings that occurred last week. “This is not normal, and we can never let it become normal,” the President stated. “I’m grateful to the law enforcement officers who risked their lives. We join people across the country praying for the families of those killed; whose hearts have been broken by yet another horrific gun violence.”
“Folks, we got to get smart. There have been over 600 mass shootings in America this year alone, plus daily acts of gun violence that don’t even make the national news. This is not normal, and we can never let it become normal,” Biden said, adding, “People have the right to feel safe — be safe.”
