The New York Police Department [NYPD] is backtracking on its statement that Diddyis under criminal investigation.
According to a new statement obtained by The Blast, the NYPD has clarified their claims about an ongoing criminal investigation into the "Gotta Move On" rapper were an error. The admission of inaccuracy comes amid the brewing scandal surrounding the rapper following his former girlfriend, Cassie, filing a lawsuit against him for allegedly raping and abusing her throughout their decade-long relationship.
NYPD Reverse Its Stance On Criminally Investigating Diddy
In the statement, which the NPD used to affirm that they were not looking into Diddy for the lawsuit against him, they began:
"Yesterday, a member of the NYPD’s public information office erroneously told a reporter about the apparent existence of an active case file containing the name 'Sean Combs.' There is no such investigation, at present. Further, the release of such information is not consistent with the internal policies of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information.”
The statement then touched on how the department treated such cases, declaring, “The NYPD always treats allegations of sexual assault and rape extremely seriously and urges anyone who has been a victim to file a police report so that support and services can be offered to survivors and a comprehensive investigation can be conducted."
As for the now-debunked announcement, the law enforcement agency had disclosed that they had a file under the name "Sean Combs" as part of an investigation involving the “I’ll Be Missing You” hitmaker.
It was then divulged that specific details of the police case are not being released publicly, as access to the file is reportedly restricted due to its sensitive nature. Additionally, the NYPD emphasized its commitment to taking sexual assault and rape cases seriously, encouraging “anyone who has been a victim to file a police report so we can perform a comprehensive investigation and offer support and services to survivors."
As we reported, The Blast reached out to Cassie's lawyers to confirm if she indeed filed a criminal case, however, the response given was "We cannot comment on this," which certainly added to the speculation that something may have been filed with the NYPD, as a straightforward "No" would have sufficed if nothing of such existed.
As reported earlier, the "Long Way 2 Go" artist accused Diddy of sexual assault, sex trafficking, and repeated physical abuse in a federal lawsuit.
"After years in silence and darkness. I am finally ready to tell my story and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships," she began in the filing.
The 37-year-old then went on to accuse Diddy of controlling and abusing her for over ten years, alleging incidents such as drugging her, physically assaulting her, and coercing her into sexual encounters with multiple male sex workers, which he recorded on video.
It is worth noting that the initial page of the legal papers contains a trigger warning that reveals it "contains highly graphic information of a sexual nature, including sexual assault."
Aubrey O'Day Opens Up About Her Own Experience With Diddy
In the hours since the news of the filing broke, several people have taken to social media to share their thoughts. One such person is reality television personality Aubrey O'Day, who recently took to her Instagram Story to share, "Been Tryna tell y'all for years. Prayers up for this queen @cassie."
The Dumblonde band member then uploaded a reel from her appearance on Kail Lowry's "Barely Famous" podcast. During a rapid-fire question game, she was asked if "Diddy put the hit out on Tupac." Although she passed on the controversial question, she alluded to Diddy being responsible, saying:
"You know d— well we can't talk about that s—because people getting murdered in the streets is a real thing. But I did spend one of the most interesting nights of my life with Suge Knight and I did ask him who killed Pac. And I also hung out with Biggie's mom and I asked her who killed Biggie."
O'Day also posted a throwback clip of Diddy confronting her on an episode of the MTV reality show "Making the Band 3," where they were arguing about her role in Danity Kane.
