The “From Dusk Till Dawn” actress was presented the Giving Tree Award by her “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” costar Channing Tatum, who called her “one of the most magical and mystically intuitive beings that has, in my opinion, ever walked this earth” in his brief introduction speech.
When she took the stage, Salma joked that the “21 Jump Street” actor was like “family to us,” going as far as to call him “Channing Tatum Pinault Hayek.” She then turned her attention to the Baby2Baby nonprofit, saying, “I am such a big fan of this organization, and I have a lot of respect for it, and I don’t have a lot of respect for many organizations.”
“The children of the world desperately need you, more now than ever,” she continued, as per The Hollywood Reporter. “I know that you have been expanding, but if you look at the times that we’re dealing with today where essentials are not even existing, where human rights are not even existing, how can we help you expand to the world?”
She detailed a medical aid she took to Sierra Leone about fifteen years ago. While there, she visited a hospital with no electricity. A woman placed a newborn baby girl in the actress’ arms, but unfortunately, the baby passed away only a few minutes later. “This was a death that could have been prevented just with the right sanitary conditions or vaccinations, with a few dollars. I felt so powerless, so helpless, so angry, so useless,” Salma said of the traumatic experience.
In the caption of her Instagram post, Salma wrote, “I am incredibly honored and grateful beyond words to receive this year’s Giving Tree Award at the 2023 Baby2Baby Gala, presented by @paulmitchell. @kellysawyer and @norahweinstein, I am in awe of your resilience, thoroughness, and hard work in creating @baby2baby, providing children living in poverty across the country with diapers, clothing, and all the basic necessities that every child deserves.”
“I am also deeply grateful for your donation of 50,000 diapers you provided to the children of Acapulco who are living in the aftermath of Hurricane Otis—thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she continued. “My dear friend @channingtatum, thank you for presenting me with this award (I know how much you hate doing this kind of thing, so thank you SO much). I promise I will continue to make it my lifetime commitment to help children across the world.”
