What Happened At Matthew Perry's Funeral? Hank Azaria Speaks Out

Hank Azaria, who guest-starred on multiple "Friends" episodes alongside close friend Matthew Perry, gave some insider information on what went down during the late actor's funeral.

Hank Azaria, who portrayed David on the famous sitcom, grew close to Perry on and off the screen. In fact, Perry revealed in his 2022 memoir that he had helped Azaira get sober and the two became very good friends.

Azaira attended the late actor's funeral earlier this month and is now giving some insider information as to what went down.

Hank Azaira, along with the main cast of "Friends", was in attendance at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills neighborhood on November 3 for Perry's funeral.

As we reported, police responded to a 911 call to assist with a possible ‘water rescue’ at Matthew Perry’s Pacific Palisades home. When the first responders arrived, they reportedly found the 54-year-old “Friends” actor in his hot tub, unresponsive.

He is believed to have drowned, but an autopsy and toxicology reports will be able to answer more questions about his true cause of death. Prescription anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications were reportedly found in Matthew Perry‘s home following his tragic death, although sources say that no illegal narcotics were discovered at the scene.

Following Perry's funeral, "Friends" actor Hank Azaria spoke out, explaining how the funeral consisted of both laughs and tears.

"I was at the funeral last weekend. You know, sad. He was a hilarious man, so we would sort of [be] alternately laughing and crying remembering him," Azaira shared of the late 54-year-old actor. "We’ve all had people we’ve lost. The world really lost him. In a way, it’s nice to have the world sort of sharing with you," he added.

Once the main cast of "Friends" went inside, Jennifer Aniston “kept to herself” as this was a “high profile gathering”, The Blast previously reported. David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, and Courteney Cox were also spotted at Perry's funeral.

Azaria credited Perry for helping him get sober as the late actor even took him to his first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in 2005.

"Whatever I can do to continue his mission, of spreading the word of recovery, and helping folks, I’ll do whatever I can," Azaria stated on wanting to help others get sober just as Perry wanted. "Matthew Perry said that he wanted to be remembered as someone who helped people get sober, even more than he wanted to be remembered as a very funny, famous Friend. I think he’ll be remembered as both," Azaria explained.

"I know that I will always think of him that way. We met almost 40 years ago, and he was, by far, the funniest friend I ever had. He also was the person who helped me get sober," Azaira added.

Matthew Perry had struggled with addiction for a long time, including the years that he was filming the hit television show, "Friends." After he got clean, he opened up about his struggles with addiction. “You know, the thing that always makes me cry, and I hope that I don’t cry here.. is that it’s not fair,” Perry stated a few years ago.

“It’s not, it’s not fair that I had to go through this disease while the other five didn’t,” he continued. “They got everything that I got. But I had to fight this thing and still have to fight this thing.”

He got teary-eyed thinking back to that time in his life, but that did not stop him from giving advice to those currently struggling with addiction. “And so just to end this on a good note, there are people that will help you. And get their help,” he stated at the time. “It doesn’t go away. It never goes away.”

Perry then made it his objective to help anyone who was struggling to get clean.
