Robert Card, the main suspect in the mass shootings that occurred in Lewiston, Maine, was committed to a mental hospital involuntarily just months before the tragic events.
It was previously reported that the 40-year-old army veteran stated he was hearing voices, and had allegedly threatened to shoot up the National Guard base in Saco. Reports also stated he was then committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this summer.
Now, we know that Mr. Card was involuntarily committed during training with his Army Reserve unit.
Robert Card's Concerning Mental Health History
Robert Card is the primary suspect in the mass shooting that took place in Lewiston last Wednesday. He was found dead Friday evening after a massive manhunt took place over the course of 48+ hours. He was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police confirmed.
Now, new reports are coming out as the investigation into Mr. Card's history continues, including his time committed to a mental health facility last summer.
It is now being reported that the 40-year-old was accusing soldiers of calling him a pedophile, even shoving a fellow soldier and then locking himself in his room during training in New York.
Robert Card spent two weeks in the New York hospital, returning to Maine on August 3.
Following his time in the hospital, Card's superiors were told that he should not handle any weapons or participate in live-fire activities.
However, Mr. Card was still able to legally purchase firearms just days before the Maine mass shootings occurred.
Law enforcement was also sent to Robert Card‘s home prior to the mass shootings that occurred after the Maine National Guard noticed Mr. Card acting strange. They then asked local police to check on the reservist, concerned he would “snap and commit a mass shooting.”
FBI Finds Note Left By Robert Card
Prior to discovering Mr. Card’s body, the FBI located a note in a home, which was believed to be owned by Mr. Card.
Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck gave more details regarding the note found in Mr. Card’s home on Friday morning, explaining that it was a paper-style note addressed to a loved one. The note reportedly stated, “This is the passcode for my phone; this is the bank account number.”
Although Sauschuck did not describe it as an explicit suicide note, he did state that the note indicated that Mr. Card would not be around for much longer, and wanted this loved one to know about these personal details. The police do have a search warrant for Mr. Card’s cellphone and will release more details as law enforcement continues their investigation.
