The cause for Matthew Perry's unexpected passing in his jacuzzi remains unsolved but certain substances have now been successfully ruled out.
Days after the "Friends" star passed away on October 28, the initial toxicology test carried out on the entertainer's body revealed his death was not substance-related for at least two major drugs. Many suspected the beloved TV personality might have taken illicit drugs given his history of addictions; however, the verdict remains uncertain with more tests being conducted.
Matthew Perry's First Toxicology Test Shows No Evidence Of Fentanyl & Meth
The "Mr. Sunshine" actor took his final breath in the hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home after playing pickleball earlier that day at the Riviera Country Club. He was found unresponsive by first responders, who also discovered various prescription pills in the Hollywood veteran's home.
At first sight, it appeared the Golden Globe Award nominee had died from drowning; however, the entertainer's cause of death was deferred pending further investigation. While investigating the Williamstown native's passing, law enforcers ran a less-in-depth toxicology test on Perry to rule out the influence of drugs like fentanyl and meth.
The results of this partial view of what the 54-year-old's system contained at the time of his death proved that he had not consumed the substances mentioned above. Nonetheless, this discovery did not rule out the presence of other illicit drugs in Perry's blood.
Sources from the police told TMZ that more in-depth tests are being conducted on the TV personality's body. These investigations are a part of the toxicology exam to determine whether the "Go On" star had consumed other illegal substances or if he took lethal doses of any prescription medication.
The absence of fentanyl and meth in Perry's initial test results matched the stories shared by the late actor's close pals. According to these sources, the 54-year-old was sober and happier than ever before his death. These claims will take about 4-6 months to be verified, which is the time necessary to carry out the remaining toxicology tests.
Once the final analysis is completed, the coroner will be able to reveal the Williamstown native's cause of death. However, if illicit drugs are discovered in the deceased's body, the investigation will be passed on to the LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division.
Many may find the department's role in Perry's case strange as there is currently no evidence of third-party involvement in the entertainer's death. However, the RHD's detectives are no strangers to taking the lead on A-list cases, given their knowledge and abundant workforce.
Conspiracy Theorists Flood Social Media With Hints About Matthew Perry's Cause Of Death
Before the Champion of Recovery Award honoree's initial toxicology test results were revealed, fans weighed in on the TV personality's death with "Baneberries" theories. One of the videos Perry dropped prior to his demise captured the 54-year-old playfully comparing himself to the fictional DC hero Batman.

In the clip, what appeared to be three cranberries were placed on a table alongside the caption, “This is what I’ve had to eat today. I’m Mattman.” The entertainer's amalgamation of his first name and Batman seemed innocent until a conspiracy theorist claimed otherwise in a shocking X post.
According to the individual, the berries in "The Kennedys: After Camelot" star's video were not cranberries but baneberries. Baneberries are a type of poisonous berry that can be fatal when consumed. The fan hinted that Perry had been crying for help with his DC-related post, writing:
"Bane, the villain, who beats Batman! ‘BAT>>> signal for death. Those aren’t cranberries. They are baneberries and deadly toxic. If he ate those, then that’s why he had a cardiac arrest; they are untraceable through autopsy."
The conspiracy theorist defended their analogy with a screenshot of the video shared by Perry alongside the screenshot of the answer to the question, “Can humans eat baneberries?” It read:
"When ingested, the berries have an almost immediate sedative effect on the human heart and can lead to cardiac arrest if enough are consumed."
The X user's theory went viral, with another resharing the screenshot in a TikTok clip with the caption, “What were they really?? cranberries, grapes, or BANEBERRIES.” Additionally, the video highlighted that consuming baneberries could cause symptoms like burning of mouth and throat, severe stomach cramps, dizziness, and hallucinations, amongst others.
The post also captured some of Perry's other social media posts where the "17 Again" actor appeared to be asking for help with Batman's symbolic bat signal. Coincidentally, others eerily foresaw the Williamstown native's demise with one comment under his berries post reading, “River left us far too soon, u don’t have to, people may not 'be surprised,' but they will be heartbroken.”
