On a recent podcast chat, actor Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff reminisced about the early days of their music career.
During a pressured album recording session in 1987, they faced a unique challenge when Jeff had a leg cast. In an attempt to remove it quickly, Smith used room-service butter knives.
Will Smith Reminisces About His Early Music Career
On the latest episode of his podcast "Class of '88," Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff reminisced about the early days of their music career, highlighting an unusual situation when Smith had to play Doctor.
In late 1987, the duo was working on a new album for Jive Records in a London hotel room and were "under pressure" to deliver an outstanding album "quickly."
Smith revealed the reason behind the pressure, stating: "It had to be great. If we messed it up, we'd probably never get a chance to make another one. It was a big question back then if rap could really make money for record companies."
Will Smith Tried To Remove DJ Jazzy Jeff's Cast With Butter Knives
However, their journey to create a rap album "quickly" had some unexpected curveballs. "Right before we left for London, Jeff broke his leg in a car accident. So when we finally arrived in our hotel, Jeff was in a full-length cast from his hip to his ankle," Smith explained, per People magazine.
Jeff acknowledged that he should have removed the cast before the journey, adding: "I probably should have gotten the cast off before we left to go make the album, but I didn't so I was way past due of this cast coming off to the point that the filling inside the cast started to irritate my kneecap — which is the reason Will kinda came up with this brilliant idea of 'I can get your cast off.'"
Smith's "brilliant idea" for removing the cast involved using the hotel's room service butter knives. Recalling the incident, Jeff said, "They bring up 24 butter knives, and he proceeds to saw, and he kind of gets it to the point that the cast starts to split."
Smith interjected: "So, I had been sawing the cast from the top, which, I guess, isn't medically recommended, so the cast got stuck maybe halfway down Jeff's leg."
Explaining the reason behind his confidence, "I did think I could get it off," Smith said.
He continued: "My basic mindset is always 'yes.' I don't see any value in saying 'no.' If somebody says, 'Will, can you fly this space shuttle?' Yes, of course. To me, that was a big part of my energy with us going out into the world and making music. It's like, why can't we do it as big as anybody's ever done it? The answer is 'yes.'"
Jeremy "JL" Lam And The Beef Stew Can That Eventually Removed The Cast
However, a turning point occurred when Jeremy "JL" Lam, a friend connected to Jam Master Jay's family, entered the room.
Smith described JL's reaction upon discovering the room, stating: "So JL came in, and JL's lookin', it's like 30 butter knives all over the floor, and you're in the tub with your cast on... it's like, 'What the f--- are you all doing?'"
Lending a hand, JL improvised. "He opened a beef stew can and the jagged edge — he was using the jagged edge of the can top and he went straight down, where I was trying to saw vertically, he went horizontally," Smith said.
Within seven minutes, the cast was removed without hospitalizing Jeff, allowing them to focus on their music, which needed a quick delivery.
Will Smith's Rough Marriage To Jada Pinkett Smith
His recent revelation comes on the heels of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith's shocking claims about their marriage.
Jada shared that she and Smith have been separated for seven years now. This claim angered several fans of Smith, mainly due to his actions at the 2022 Oscar Awards, where the actor slapped comedian Chris Rock.
At the time, Smith yelled at Rock after hitting him, "Keep my wife's name out of your f------ mouth."
Although things seem rough between the pair, Smith has since supported Jada's new memoir, "Worthy." During an event for the book's release, the "I am Legend" actor described his marriage to the "Girls Trip" star as "brutiful," meaning "brutal and beautiful."
