The Maine mass shooting suspect, Robert Card, has reportedly been found dead according to reports released on the night of Friday, October 27.
On Wednesday, 18 individuals were killed and over a dozen more were injured at two separate locations: the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar & Grille.
Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office Confirms Maine Mass Shooting Suspect Is ‘Deceased’
In a statement posted to their Facebook page on Friday night, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s office released a short statement reading, “The suspect in Wednesday night's shooting has been located and deceased.”
A few hours before this news came in, Sheriff Eric G. Samson encouraged all individuals in the Maine area to “remain calm and vigilant,” writing, “The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office continues to keep the victims, families, and communities impacted by the horrific events in our county in our thoughts as we serve.”
Samson explained that not only was the county sheriff’s office staying in contact with public safety officials throughout the state, but he also noted that they were attending briefings and monitoring law enforcement information that was being shared.
“We continue to offer assistance while assuring we have enough resources needed throughout our county. A request to shelter in place remains in effect for the greater Lewiston/Auburn and Lisbon area,” the message states. “Many county and municipal officials are being asked to provide officers at many community events, but there are not enough resources to cover every event.”
“Please keep those impacted by this tragedy in your hearts and minds. Public Safety across the state and country are dedicated to capturing the individual responsible while providing safety to all,” Samon concluded, encouraging organizations of any event to consider whether or not the event should be postponed for the safety of its members.
Mass Shooting Suspect Was Found Near Lisbon Falls
On Friday night, the body of 40-year-old Robert Card was found at 7:45 PM near Lisbon Falls, where his car had been abandoned after Wednesday’s senseless acts of violence. According to the Daily Mail, his body was located near a recycling plant close to where he had recently been fired. According to the outlet, the Commander of Maine’s Department of Public Safety, Mike Sauschuck, declined to state if he had been dead for hours or days.
In a statement, Sauschuck said, “There continues to be a lot of work that needs to be done here at the scene, and a lot to follow up on,” confirmed that Card is believed to have passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Sauschuck also noted that the hunting ban has been lifted in the area, as Saturday is the start of deer hunting season and an important day for many individuals in the area.
President Joe Biden Calls The Situation ‘Tragic’
In a statement released on Friday, President Joe Biden said, “This has been a tragic two days – not just for Lewiston, Maine, but for our entire country. Once again, an American community and American families have been devastated by gun violence.
“In all, at least eighteen souls brutally slain, more injured, some critically, and scores of family and friends praying and experiencing trauma no one ever wants to imagine,” he continued. “Numerous brave law enforcement officers have worked around the clock to find this suspect and prevent the loss of more innocent life – all while risking their own. They are the best of us.”
“Tonight we're grateful that Lewiston and surrounding communities are safe after spending excruciating days hiding in their homes,” he went on. “I thank Governor Janet Mills for her steady leadership during this time of crisis, and continue to direct my administration to provide everything that is needed to support the people of Maine.”
“Americans should not have to live like this. I once again call on Republicans in Congress to fulfill their obligation to keep the American people safe. Until that day comes, I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic,” he concluded, adding, “The Lewiston community – and all Americans – deserve nothing less.”
On Friday night, Maine Governor Janet Mills said she was “breathing a sigh of relief knowing Card is no longer a threat to anyone,” adding, “Tonight the city of Lewiston and the people of Maine begin to move forward on a long process of healing - but we will heal, together.”
The shelter-in-place order was listed on Friday shortly before the discovery of Robert Card’s body was announced.
