It looks like TylerPerry is making headlines for all of the right reasons!
Josephine Wright has been in an active fight with developers in Hilton Head, South Carolina to keep land her family has owned since the Civil War. Tons of people, including a few celebrities, have donated to the 93-year-old's GoFundMe, and one celebrity is going a step further by building her a new home.
Actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry is now getting involved and building a 5-bedroom home for Wright as she's about to lose the home she lives in with her grandchildren.
Tyler Perry Is Building Josephine Wright A New Home!
Wright's home and land have reportedly been part of her family for more than 30 years, but land developers claim it's part of their property. The fight has been going strong for much of this year, and Wright, a grandmother to 40, great-grandmother to 50, and great-great-grandmother to 16, has been standing her ground to keep what's rightfully hers.
"I've been pretty much of a fighter all my life," Wright told local news WSAV-TV. "It puzzled me at first, but then it got me angry."
Wright is angry at the lawsuit filed by Bailey Point Investment Group earlier this year. The group reportedly wanted to buy the land from Wright. However, she didn't want to give it up due to the fact that it's been in her family for many generations. Unfortunately, the group filed a suit to seize control of her property.
This is where Perry stepped in to help.
TMZ reported that Perry's construction crew will break ground on a brand-new home for Wright and her grandchildren in the coming weeks after the necessary permits are filed.
Perry originally pledged to help Wright back in July when the lawsuit became public. And now months later, as the fight continues, he's sticking to his word.
A GoFundMe Has Raised More Than The Original Goal!
In May, Wright's granddaughter Charise Graves set up a GoFundMe to help her grandmother fight the developers.
"Bailey Point Investment, a greedy land development company, is trying to take her property away from her as her land is situated right in the middle of their new residential subdivision, currently under construction. This land has been in our family since the end of the Civil War and she has poured her heart and soul into maintaining the property for herself and her family to enjoy for generations to come," the GoFundMe description reads.
"Unfortunately, Bailey Point Investment is trying to force her off the land so they can develop it for their profit. The harassment this poor woman has endured and is still suffering at the hands of this unscrupulous company is unimaginable. She's being unfoundedly sued by Bailey Point for encroachment."
The description continues to explain that the developers claim that Wright's back porch and shed are encroaching on their new property.
"In their lawsuit, they are also making claims that she is not the legal heir to her property which she has lived and paid taxes on for over 30 years," the description continues. "My grandmother is heartbroken but resilient and not ready to give up without a fight. That's why I am turning to you, the community, for help."
The GoFundMe had a goal of $350,000 and to date has raised $363,245.
NBA star Kyrie Irving donated $40,000 four months ago and then donated an additional $24,240 less than a month ago. Rapper Snoop Dogg also donated $10,000 a few months ago. Nearly 7,000 other donations were also made by people donating anything from a couple of dollars up to thousands in order to support her cause.
A few weeks ago, an update on the GoFundMe page explained that after a weekend filled with celebrations and honoring Wright at the Roots & Rivers Festival and a yoga session at her home, a tree fell on her house.
"Grandma Josephine wasn't home and luckily, no human was injured," the update reads. "I can't say the same for the house. She sustained two holes in her roof."
It sounds like Wright's troubles will soon come to a close with not only her heartwarming GoFundMe fundraiser but also a new home, courtesy of Perry and his altruistic spirit.
