Actor Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, were apparently not even together when the "King Richard" actor slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars over a joke over Jada's hair loss condition, known as alopecia.
In a new interview, the "Girls Trip" star revealed that the couple is still "figuring it out" when it comes to their marriage after disclosing that they had gone to therapy in the past to work on their relationship.
Jada Pinkett Smith Says She's Still 'Figuring It Out' When It Comes To Will Smith
Despite being married to the "Independence Day" actor since 1997, the "Red Table Talk" host admits that she is still "figuring it out" when it comes to her relationship with the Oscar-winning actor.
“We’re still figuring it out,” she told People magazine in an interview published on Wednesday. “We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”
In regards to the infamous Oscars slap, the 52-year-old talk show host says she thought that her husband storming the stage to slap Chris Rock was part of "a skit."
“I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him,’” Jada recalled. “It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.” She said she asked Will "Are you okay?" once the two were alone after the show finished.
Despite being separated for years, Jada said that she intends to support the actor throughout his future endeavors, even though he was banned by The Academy for ten years as a result of the incident.
“I’m going to be by his side but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself," she said.
Jada Pinkett Smith Recalls Her Struggles With Depression
Although there will be more bombshells about her life revealed in her new book "Worthy," which is scheduled for release on October 17, Jada told the magazine that she had actually started planning her own death after she turned forty.
"When I turned 40, I was in so much pain. I couldn’t figure a way out besides death. So I made a plan," she explained, confessing that it looked like she "had it all" from the outside looking in. “But, while I was really living the dream, I hit a huge wall — a massive amount of depression. I think that I looked at having outside sources to supplement for the voids that I was feeling inside."
The talk show host said that she heard "voices" telling her "You're not worth anything" and encouraging her to take her own life. “I started looking for places, cliffs where I could have an accident because I didn't want my kids to think that their mother had committed suicide," she told the publication.
She went on to say that her suicidal ideation disappeared entirely after a friend of her son Jaden mentioned that their father had gone through an ayahuasca ceremony, which involves taking a plant-based psychedelic drug while a leader guides a group through their hallucinations.
“Ayahuasca helped me," Jada said. "It gave me a new intimate relationship with myself that I had never had before.” She said that “the suicidal thoughts completely went away" after taking the psychedelic drug and confessed that her husband and children have taken it too after her positive experience with it.
Jada Pinkett Smith Describes Will Smith As Her 'Drug'
Although Jada later turned to Ayahuasca to aid in her mental health struggle, she confessed that Will had become her "drug" when they first started dating several decades ago.
At the time, Jada admitted that she was being treated for depression, suicidal ideation, and taking medication all while her career was taking off. “Once I met Will, I completely abandoned my mental health. I was so intoxicated by him and our dynamic. I really felt like I'm cured," she recalled, admitting that she stopped taking Prozac once their relationship started. “He became the drug.”
