Kristen Stewart Protests Cannes High Heels Rule by Going Barefoot

Kristen Stewart tossed off her high heels and went barefoot last night on the red carpet at the Cannes Fim Festival. It is an act that is both commonplace and totally understandable to anyone who’s ever gone to a wedding or prom … but in Cannes, it’s not just an act of comfort, it’s an act of protest.

The French Riveria film fest has a mandated high heel dress code for women on the red carpet. Earlier this week, K. Stew talked to a reporter about the shoe rule and said that she was #overit.
“Things have to change immediately. It has become really obvious that if [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, ‘Excuse me, young lady, you’re not wearing heels. You cannot come in.’ Then [I’m going to say], ‘Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?’ It can work both ways,” Stewart said. “It’s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him. I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version—flats or heels.”

She took that sentiment a step further (get it?) and boldly removed her black Christian Louboutin pumps in front of the cameras at a screening of the film, “Blackkklansman.”
