Roseanne Barr may have known the axe was about to come down before she tweeted out her mea culpa, but ABC just canceled her show following a racist comment about Valerie Jarrett.
ABC president Channing Dungey just released the statement: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”
Barr’s co-star and TV daughter, Sara Gilbert, also condemned the comedian for the racist jab, saying “Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least.” She continued, “This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”
Showrunner Whitney Cummings recently quit the show citing her “tour schedule,” but many believed she left because of Roseanne’s polarizing personality and public comments.
Wanda Sykes, who was a consulting producer on the revived sitcom, announced she would also not be returning before the official cancellation announcement.
Roseanne has not commented since the cancellation.
