Political fanatics are reacting to California Governor Gavin Newsom's choice of Laphonza Butler as a replacement for Senator Dianne Feinstein who died on Thursday, September 28.

With this appointment, Butler became not only the sole Black woman in the Senate but also the first LGBTQ+ individual to represent California in this legislative body. Meanwhile, Ms. Feinstein, a pioneer for women in politics, held the distinction of being the oldest senator.

Less than two months after he expressed his desire to appoint a Black woman to fill Feinstein's remaining term, lasting until the November 2024 elections, in case the seat becomes vacant, Newsom has followed through.

The California Governor has set his eyes on a strategist who's the first Black woman to lead Emily's List — a fundraising organization committed to electing female candidates who support reproductive rights. Announcing the decision via a lengthy address, the Democrat began:

"I'm proud to announce California's new United States Senator -- Laphonza Butler. As we mourn the enormous loss of Sen. Feinstein, the very freedoms she fought for -- reproductive freedom, equal protection, and safety from gun violence -- have never been under greater assault. Laphonza has spent her entire career fighting for women and girls and has been a fierce advocate for working people."

The former lieutenant governor of California noted her accomplishments as "the first Black lesbian to openly serve in the U.S. Senate," before concluding:

"From her time as President of EMILY's List to leading the state's largest labor union, she has always stood up for what is right and has led with her heart and her values. I have no doubt she will carry the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to break glass ceilings, and fight for all Californians in Washington."

The news, which was shared via X on Sunday night, has unexpectedly resulted in an eruption of differing opinions among many. "I'm excited by this choice made by Newsom. It's amazing, he made the right choice," one X user wrote, as another expressed, "Congrats to the new Senator, Laphonza Butler! It's comforting to know that the fight for important freedoms continues, even if Feinstein's shoes are big ones to fill."

A third fan pointed out, "Newsom kept his promise 👍🏿," and a fourth quoted, "Brilliant choice. She will represent the state admirably and those already in the race can keep up the work of campaigning, with the voters deciding in 2024."

At the same time, others who had a problem with Newsom's choice, especially due to Butler's residence, voiced their concerns. One person typed, "No wonder we all guessed wrong, no one thought you would pick someone form [sic] Maryland," and another wondered, "😂 You couldn't find one Black woman who resides in California? You had to pick some radical who lives in Maryland? ✊🏿."

"Pretty harsh evaluation of California politicians if you've got to go all the way across the continent to find someone to represent your state in the Senate," a third critic chimed. Similarly, a fourth observer stated, "I'm sure she's well qualified, but wasn't there anyone well qualified actually registered to vote in California? Not the best look idk."A fifth netizen sarcastically applauded:

"Another diversity hire, just what we need. Because those always work out so well…"

Regardless of how Newsom's choice is viewed, there's no doubt that Butler's strong political career and résumé speak for themself. Per The New York Times, the 44-year-old has played a significant role in California politics for almost 15 years, previously leading the state's largest labor union and advising Vice President Kamala Harris.

Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right."

"There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother. Senator Feinstein was a force of nature who made an incredible impact on our country and her home state. She left a legacy that is undeniable and extraordinary."

Sauls wrapped up by stating that even though there was "much to say about who she was and what she did," her loved ones and staff needed time to "grieve the passing of our beloved boss, mentor and friend."
