The death of Len Goodman came as a rude shock to fans worldwide, but his fighting spirit remains a highlight in his epic life journey.
Fresh details in his death certificate confirm the speculation surrounding Goodman's passing. The dance veteran was rumored to have died from an advanced form of cancer. Goodman retired from judging duties five months before his death to spend time with his family in the United Kingdom.
‘DWTS’ Judge Len Goodman Died From 'Metastatic Prostate Cancer' 14 Years After Operation
The Ballroom legend death certificate explained that he died due to bone cancer caused by his prostate cancer. He initially went under the knife to remove a malignant tumor discovered in his prostate gland in June 2009 and kept things hush-hush.
Goodman was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2009 and did not get treatment until he finished filming "Dancing With The Stars." The surgery was very successful, but info on his death certificate stated that things got complicated soon after, leading to a dangerous spread of the cancer into his bones.
Goodman's cause of death is now identified as "metastatic prostate cancer," better known as "advanced prostate cancer." Per Daily Express, the cancer spreads to the lymph nodes in other parts of the body or the bones and lungs.
His agent, Jackie Gill, earlier disclosed in the wake of his passing that he died from bone cancer. Goodman's death was registered the day after his death and, coincidentally, on his 79th birthday by his wife, Sue, beside him at the Hospice as he passed away.
In June, The Blast disclosed that Goodman kept his health battles away from his colleagues on "DWTS," including pro dancer Derek Hough. The 38-year-old revealed that while they all "sensed his fragility," they had little idea how much his death had deteriorated. He said:
"This was a huge shock for all of us. He's a special guy, just a special guy. We lost somebody special."
The award-winning performer described his friendship with Goodman and how much he meant to him. "He was just pure joy. He was. I mean, what he represented and did for that show, for television, for all of us." continued the Primetime Emmy Award recipient.
Hough dedicated a moving tribute to the icon following his passing with a clip of himself and Goodman sharing a laugh and a dance. He wrote:
"...But when I think back at the memories we shared with Len, his sense of humor, his smile and charm, everything feels much brighter and full of sunshine. Still hard to fully process, but filled with gratitude knowing I had the privilege of working beside this absolute legend. We will miss you dearly, Len. We love you. Rest In Peace, my friend."
'DWTS' Renames The Mirror Ball Trophy In Honor Of Len Goodman
To honor Goodman's impressive journey in the ballroom and dance world at large, the executive producer of "DWTS" Conrad Green, announced a change regarding the award on the show, saying:
"The Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy will now be lifted on 'Dancing With the Stars' like the Vince Lombardi trophy is lifted at the Super Bowl."
Per The Blast, contestants on the dance show will now compete for the newly redesigned Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. Green disclosed that the decision was made to permanently etch Goodman's good name into the iconic history of "DWTS" and to "always remind people of the importance" of Goodman to the show.
The producer showered praises on Goodman as he pointed out his sharp eye for detail and vast knowledge of dance, which positively impacted the journey of famous dance shows throughout the years.
Green continued that the dancers always looked out for Goodman's judgment on their performance as his presence attracted so much respect to the show. Many plans were implemented for his remembrance and honor, including a tribute show slated for later in the season with a quick journey through his astounding career.
According to Green, the tribute show will include visual tributes from colleagues, family, friends, and dance performances. Goodman was the head judge on "Strictly Come Dancing" from its launch episode in 2004 until 2016, and he joined "DWTS" from 2005 to his retirement in 2022.
