'My Body Is Really Inflamed'
Lorde, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, opened up about her health and emotional struggles in a personal letter to fans. The 26-year-old singer disclosed that she ceased taking the medication she had been on for 11 years to understand her body's needs better.
She shared, per Daily Mail, "My body is really inflamed, it's trying to tell me something and I'm trying to support it but nothing seems to help and I get frustrated."
She continued, "My gut isn't working properly, my skin is worse than ever, I've gotten sick half a dozen times. I realized earlier this year that listening to my body is hard for me, it's something I never really learned how to do."
"I've been trying to teach myself that this year, but it's been hard actually, pretty confronting, has made me fully aware of all the times I ignored it or didn't give it what it needed, shamed it for a fight or flight response, took a handful of pills and pushed through."
She mentioned her decision to stop taking the "little yellow pill," adding, "The little yellow pill I took every morning for thousands of mornings since I was 15, I stopped taking it five days ago. Gonna see how it goes."
Lords Says She's 'Living With Heartbreak Again'
In the candid letter, Lorde also disclosed that she is grappling with heartbreak alongside her health issues. While the "Team" hitmaker didn't comment on her current relationship status with boyfriend Justin Warren, she hinted at emotional struggles.
Lorde and Warren were initially linked in 2016, although he denied dating rumors at the time. Speculation about their engagement arose in October 2021 when the "Green Light" singer wore a diamond ring at a red carpet event. The couple's last public appearance together was in March of the current year.
Lorde expressed the ongoing ache of heartbreak, revealing, "I'm living with heartbreak again. It's different but the same. I ache all the time, I forget why and then remember. I'm not trying to hide from the pain, I understand now that pain isn't something to hide from, that there's actually great beauty in moving with it."
She shared her attempts to cope, adding, "But sometimes I'm sick of being with myself. I eat chocolate to try and manipulate the endorphins and bring back the sweet happiness of Easter morning. I sit in the time machine and wait for it to move, but it hasn't been invented yet."
Lorde Is Determined To Look Back On 2023 With 'Fondness'
Despite facing challenges, Lorde expressed her determination to look back on 2023 with fondness. The Grammy-winning singer said, "I know I'm gonna look back on this year with fondness and a bit of awe, knowing it was the year that locked everything into place, the year that transitioned me from my childhood working decade to the one that comes next — one that even through all this, I'm so excited for. It's just hard when you're in it."
Reflecting on her recent European tour and the process of creating new music, the "Solar Power" singer emphasized her need to make records as a means of release and transformation. Lorde sees her songs as "spells; a spell to let go of something, a spell to unlock a door," although it can be painful to confront the emotions they bring to the surface.
Lorde Teases Two New Songs
Lorde offered a sneak peek at two upcoming songs during her headlining performance at the U.K.'s Boardmasters Festival last month. Video clips from her set showed her performing against the backdrop of a moon, debuting material from what appeared to be two unreleased tracks.
Fans who shared setlists online revealed the potential titles of these songs as "Silver Moon" and "Invisible Ink."
Lorde also invited Caroline Polachek for a special rendition of "Green Light" at the Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary. During the same event, she delighted the audience with a live performance of "Silver Moon."
