Erica Mena Says She 'Regrets' Calling Co-Star Spice A 'Monkey' On 'Love And Hip-Hop'

Erica Mena has apologized for calling her former "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta" co-star Spice a "monkey" during a heated moment. Mena explained that it was simply a wrong choice of words, and she isn't racist. However, the exchange got her kicked off the 11th season of the reality series.

Highlighting that she has two black kids of her own, the reality star noted she didn't understand the "gravity" of her statement. This recent development comes after the reality TV star got into trouble with the law after biting and attacking an officer a few weeks ago.

Mena has issued an official apology to her former co-star on "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta," Spice, for referring to her as a "monkey" during a heated exchange. She expressed how sorry she was for the "insensitive" comment and explained that it wasn't intentional.

In a statement shared on her Instagram page, Mena said, "I deeply regret my insensitive comment and want to humbly apologize to anybody I hurt or offended by my thoughtlessness. My choice of words was wrong, and I take full responsibility for what I said."

The remark was triggered by an argument between Mena and Spice about family issues. During the exchange, Mena got upset, flipped over a table, and called her Black-American former co-star a "monkey," among other things.

After her shocking remark aired on "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta," Mena was pulled from the show's 11th season.

Although Mena was disappointed in herself for the way she responded, she explained in her statement that she wasn't racist. A second part of the apology read that she was "committed to listening to the voices of those affected" and was ready to do what it takes to "make amends."

However, the mother of "two black children" insisted that the statement was not racially charged and simply came out in the spur of the moment. Mena said, "I want to make it clear that my use of that word was not in any way racially driven." Notwithstanding, the reality star will remain off the show following the controversial incident.

The "Love and Hip-Hop." team gave a statement on the Afro-Latina's dismissal on their Instagram page. The statement read, "The Love & Hip Hop franchise has never shied away from hard conversations in our community. Working hand-in-hand with our partners, viewers will see the impact of Erica Mena's remarks play out in the final three episodes of the season." They added that she would not be appearing in the next season of "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta."

The former "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta" star got into trouble with the police after fighting at an Atlanta bar with three other people. Things escalated when she refused to leave the lounge after being asked to by security. Mena reportedly got violent with the guards as they tried to remove her from the building.

Subsequently, Mena attacked some police officers, biting one on the arm and kicking another in the face. The cops were able to get her under some control after the struggle. However, she was arrested along with the others involved in the brawl.

Following the arrest, Drew Findling, Erica Mena's attorney, noted to TMZ that an investigation would begin concerning the incident, which took place on August 25th. 

He added, "It is evident that this incident involved civilians, private security personnel, and off-duty police officers, and the situation was not adequately managed or de-escalated."

Findling explained that the officers were guilty of punching a "private citizen" up to five times and "using excessive force" on Mena. However, he admitted that his client was responsible for her reaction to the police and "acknowledges regrets regarding some aspects of that evening."

Findling added that he was committed to reviewing the matter and reaching a conclusion. Concerning the others taken into custody, the police explained that they obstructed the officers from restraining Mena earlier and were guilty of misdemeanors.
