The band broke up in the early 1990s and have famously stayed away from one another publicly since their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction 21 years ago. News broke of David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison's reunion at the Toronto International Film Festival for a question and answer session following a film screening, and fans quickly expressed their excitement and, honestly, downright surprise at the unexpected reunion.

The 'TIFF' appearance follows the 70-year-old musician's recent revelations about the group's demise in 1991. The "Dream Operator" singer expressed his regrets about Talking Heads' breakup, calling it "kind of ugly," adding his belief that their split wasn't "handled well" in an interview with PEOPLE.

The reunion took place last night and was monitored by Spike Lee.

Inside Talking Heads' Highly-Anticipated Reunion

Fans did not have to be in Toronto to catch the screening; according to the New York Times, the discussion was broadcast to IMAX theaters globally. "Stop Making Sense" will be screened in IMAX theaters on September 22nd and will be released in theaters a few days later, on the 29th!

The band sat together on stage alongside the "Do The Right Thing" director for the screening. It was undoubtedly an exciting moment for fans of a bar with a frontman who recently described himself as "not pleasant to be around" during the band's heyday! (per The Blast.)

"When I was working on some Talking Heads shows, I was a bit more of a little tyrant," Byrne said in the PEOPLE above interview. "And then I learned to relax, and I also learned that collaborating with people, both sides get more if there's a good relationship instead of me telling everybody what to do."

Talking Heads gathered for 25 minutes on stage with Lee, who proclaimed his love for "Stop Making Sense."

Byrne was thrilled to celebrate the film. He said, "When I was watching this just now, I thought, this is why we came to the movie theaters. This is different than watching it on my laptop!" Byrne would later join the dancing audience members in celebrating the pure joy of the performance, according to the outlet.

"Stop Making Sense" was initially filmed in California in 1983 by the late critically acclaimed director Jonathan Demme. Demme passed away in 2017.

According to Harrison, part of the film's legacy concerns the band's evident excitement for the performance.

"One of the reasons for the film's lasting power is that we're having so much fun on stage. The audience is brought right into it. We say, 'You're part of this too.' And I think that every time somebody watches it, it brings back that wonderful emotion," Harrison said.

What Did The Band Think Of Their Big Night?

A red carpet photo of Talking Heads was posted to their Instagram on Tuesday! Frantz, Harrison, and Byrne smile while Weymouth shows off her shades and classic red lipstick.

The photo's caption reads, "It's great to be here."

Talking Heads' followers on the gram were thrilled to see the band together and look visibly happy!

"I couldn't stop smiling at you all during the TIFF interview I could see online. I can't wait to get the chance to see the re-release in theatres!

Blessings on all your future endeavors, and thank you so much for all the past ones! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™Œ," a follower commented.
