'Jeopardy!' Host Mayim Bialik Opens Up About Her Colonoscopy: ‘It’s Not Terribly Fun Getting Older’

Earlier this month, the “Blossom” child star opened up about her experience getting a colonoscopy in order to destigmatize the medical procedure in an Instagram video filmed in her hospital gown. “It’s not terribly fun getting older. Especially when you have to get a routine colonoscopy and really wish you didn’t have to,” she wrote in the caption before she broke down four separate reasons as to why she wanted to share her experience online.

“Well, I’m sharing this because: 1. Let’s remove the stigma of routine things that we really should not have problems as a society talking about - ignoring things doesn’t make them go away! Also, let’s not be Puritanical about colonoscopies. It’s a thing,” she wrote. “2. It wasn’t bad at all. 3. I have tips to share another time to help you not have it be so bad. 4. Please don’t put off taking care of your body. It’s connected with your mind and your mental and emotional well-being. Be proactive.”

Fans took to the comments to explain how important it was to get a colonoscopy and share their own personal stories about how colonoscopies detected colon cancer. “I had a colonoscopy done in March and discovered that I have colon cancer. My surgeon removed the cancer and I am almost 4 months into 6 months of chemotherapy. So far everything is looking very good,” one fan commented.

“OMG. My dad just had a colonoscopy today and found out he's got colon cancer. He's 79 years old. They want to do chemo to shrink the tumor and think they might not have to do surgery. My dad is not sure if he wants to go through any treatment,” another follower shared. “If he doesn't get treatment then they said he has about 8 months. Get tested, and call your doctor today. Please from a daughter who doesn't want to lose her dad!”

Mayim Bialik Shares An Update… She Survived!

In a follow-up Instagram video, the “Call Me Kat” star revealed that she had “survived” her colonoscopy. “Colonoscopy Update: I have survived! Here are some reasons to consider scheduling a preventative procedure if you’re eligible,” she wrote in the caption, referring to her video. “And stay tuned for my top prep tips. Physical care is mental care!!”

Many fans agreed that the prep itself was a lot harder than the actual test. “I agree with you in demystifying colonoscopies! People are put off by the prep but if your doctor prescribes Ducolax and Miralax then the prep is no big deal. It’s that other drink stuff that can put people off. Yuck,” one fan shared.

Other followers pointed out that getting a colonoscopy is not exactly accessible to everyone, as someone is needed to stay with you during the appointment and drive you home afterward. Many fans commented that they were unable to get a colonoscopy appointment simply because they didn’t know anyone well enough to stay with them or drive them home.

“Unfortunately, at least where I live, they require that someone drive me, stay with me during the procedure, drive me home, and stay with me for at least 24 hours afterward. And I don't have anyone who can do that,” one fan commented.

“The problem is so many people are ALONE. They have no one at all to drive them and stay. In our area, they DO insist someone be there the whole time and drive you home. They will NOT allow cab or Uber either since those drivers are not responsible to get you up outside stairs or indoor stairs etc.,” another follower wrote. “Outpatient procedures are much more common yet are a big hassle because being alone just a couple hours after anesthesia isn’t safe. The insurance companies have stripped care. Being all alone is far more common than most think.”
