By Melanie VanDerveer on September 1, 2023 at 10:00 AM EDT
With grocery prices going up on basically everything, many are noticing that potato chips are a ridiculous price lately. And people want answers as to why.
Reddit user LusciousofBorg asked the question, "Why are chips so freaking expensive right now?" and more than 7,000 people wanted to talk about the insanity in the thread.
It's Not Only Chips
"The amount of single items over $5 drives me crazy."

What About Cereal?
"Everything else is so why not. Cereal is also a serious offender right now."

Stop Buying Chips!
"Chip guy here. It's simply because people keep buying them. Corporate have raised the price 3-5 times since I started 2+ years ago. 2.00 bag that used to say 2.00 only raised to 2.29, 2.49, and now 2.69. They even go 'on sale' at 2 for 5 now. People still buy them, if not more so, and that's on the lower end of pricing compared to the large price hike on the bigger bags."

Why Change It If It's Working?
"Companies realized they can price gouge & blame it on inflation.... and people still pay extra, so why change it?"

Maybe A Blessing In Disguise
"This is the best time for everyone who wants to, to get into great shape. All food is too expensive right now but junk food and fast food is especially expensive now for no reason. I’ve been cooking from home more than ever and I’m wondering why I wasn’t doing this in the first place. This is f***ed up to say but it’s lowkey a blessing in disguise. At least for me and my health journey."

Well That's Quite The Comparison
"My Funyuns cost more than my weed."

Genius!
"They made weed legal, so they knew we would have the Munchies. 😙💨"

Blame The War
"The Ukraine war, first and foremost. That conflict has caused massive supply chain disruptions in not only the grain needed to make chips but the fertilizer needed to grow that grain. Russia is the world's largest exporter in grain and fertilizer. The sanctions imposed because of the war have effectively removed these exports from global markets."

Tracking The Phenomenon
"I've been tracking this phenomenon since 2005. I posted on a message board in 2011 about the cost of a 11.5 oz bag of Doritos. That size bag was $2.75 in 2005, often for sale as 2-for-1, halving that price. By 2011, one bag that size was $4.29. They have shrunk the bag more than once since then and the cost continues to go up."

"The Walmart Of Chips"
"I work for frito and I don’t even buy our stuff anymore. Almost $7 for a bag of chips is ridiculous. Corporate greed is the issue more than anything and they have to appease the stockholders of the company. Bonuses for frontline workers are few and far between anymore for anyone. Best way I can describe it is Frito Lay has basically turned into the Walmart of chips. Money is the only thing they care about anymore and screw the workers. I understand inflation has affected everything but the only reason they’re charging this much is because they can and people still buy it."

Protip!
"Protip: Call the 1-800 number on the back of the chips and tell them you were 'unsatisfied' for any reason and they will send you coupons for free chips.
Normally this would be a d**k move, but they're the d**ks now for upselling this shit for like 10x the price it's worth. They can obviously afford to comp you for chip coupons, so why not take the opportunity. Otherwise I ain't buying any more chips, which I guess is a win for my health."
