Shady Cop With Connection To Gilgo Beach Murders Arrested On Soliciting Charges

The police officer accused of making a complete messof the original Gilgo Beach murder investigations just got arrested.

Burke, the former police chief, was picked up this week for supposedly soliciting a sex worker in New York. He is best known for making a muck of the early investigation into the Gilgo Four and not taking it seriously.

The ex-Suffolk County Police Chief was arrested on Tuesday at the Suffolk County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Selden. The Sun alleges that Burke was charged with offering a sex act, public lewdness, indecent exposure, and criminal solicitation. With additional charges pending.

This isn’t a good look for Burke, who has had a shady past regarding more than just his job; he was also once caught with a few suspect items in the trunk of his police cruiser, but more on that later.

Unfortunately, Burke was already back in the news when Rex Heuermann was arrested last month and suspected of being the Long Island Killer, also known as the Gilgo Beach Murders. Burke was the police chief of Suffolk County in 2011 and made a mess of the case.

He was accused of getting in the way of the FBI’s investigation because Burke was being investigated on the side in connection to that incident we said we would get back to. Burke nearly beat a heroin addict named Christopher Loeb to death in a holding cell.

Loeb had broken into Burke’s patrol car and found a bag of sex toys and a porn DVD showing women being tortured. He took it, and of course, Burke freaked out when he saw him; he arrested him and took the opportunity to assault the addict physically.

Burke even took it further and threatened to give Loeb a lethal “hot dose” of heroin. “[Burke] never wanted us involved in the [Gilgo Beach] case because he knew we were investigating him,” an FBI source told the New York Post back in 2015.

Even though he stepped down from the job, he was later sentenced to 46 months in prison for the attack on Loeb and his efforts to cover it up. The arrest of Heuermann has drudged up old drama and shined a light on people we haven’t thought of in years.

In the present day, the Gilgo Four could be getting some justice after Heuermann’s arrest and the collection of his DNA. He remains the main suspect in the disappearance and murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. 11 other bodies are also being tested in this investigation. Heuermann is the main suspect so far.

He has pleaded not guilty to six charges laid against him on August 1 in a New York courtroom. The charges so far are three counts of murder in the first degree and three counts of murder in the second degree.
