Was Britney Spears trying to adopt a baby before her divorce from Sam Asghari made headlines?

During a 2021 court hearing before her conservatorship ended, the 41-year-old pop star expressed a desire to grow her family. “I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” she said at the time. “I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant.”

Following the end of her conservatorship in November 2021, the pop star announced that she was pregnant; however, she took to Instagram to share the sad news that she lost the baby in May 2022. One fan is alleging that Britney, who shares two teenage sons with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, never stopped trying to grow her family, and that "Project Rose" is really about a failed adoption.

The "Toxic" singer has been talking about "Project Rose" for years. On July 26, she even shared that “Rose” was now three.

Many fans first speculated that “Project Rose” was the name of Britney’s new album, as the last one to be released was 2016’s “Glory.” However, Britney has not explained the meaning behind the name. She has also never announced why she changed the name in her bio to “Maria River Red.”

One user on TikTok claims that they have the "tea," alleging that the pop star tried to adopt a daughter named Rose, but the adoption was ultimately a scam.

In a video posted to TikTok, a woman claims that “The last blind item I had received about Britney Spears […] was about her trying to adopt a baby girl named Rose and there being documents and papers and then her finding out at the end [that] all of that, that it was all a scam and she was betrayed.” They also made it clear that they do not believe the allegations that Britney cheated on her husband, alleging that the sources that leaked that to the media has a hidden agenda due to the conservatorship.

“And as I’ve been saying, all Britney wants is a daughter,” the fan continued. “All she wants is a baby girl. And as soon as she realized Sam was not about that and was playing with her, what do you know? There’s a divorce.” Unfortunately, reports of trouble have been brewing for a while. In March 2023, the two were photographed without their wedding rings, although a rep for the actor insisted that he had only removed his to film a movie role.

Britney announced that she was pregnant in April 2022, shortly before the two were married on June 2022. At the time, Sam told  Access Hollywood that he did not want to know the sex of the child until it was born. “That’s up to her, but I don’t want to,” he told host Mario Lopez. “That’s something I want to wait for.”

He said that the sex of the child did not matter to him, adding,  “If it’s a daughter, it’s going to be the most spoiled princess ever. If it’s a son, it’s going to be the toughest son — I’m going to be tough on the kid.” When asked if he was planning on being a hands-on father, he replied, “Absolutely man, hands-on as much as possible. This is my baby. My first baby.”

In an interview with BBC Persian before Britney’s pregnancy reveal, Sam said that he was ready to be a father “three years ago.” At the time, he said, “Yeah, I mean, this should have happened three years ago, to be honest with you.” adding, “When you’re in a relationship with someone that you’re truly in love with, you want to recreate. And this is something that I want to do.”

Unfortunately, a month later, the pop star took to Instagram to let the world know that they were no longer expecting a child together. “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy," she wrote at the time. "This is a devastating time for any parent. Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along however we were overly excited to share the good news.”

“Our love for each other is our strength,” the statement continued. “We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family. We are grateful for all of your support. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult moment.” In the caption, Britney wrote, “We are grateful for what we have in the process of expanding our beautiful family. Thank you for your support.”

In her statement, Britney admitted that the couple would "continue trying to expand" their family, but she did not give her fans any indication that the couple was looking into adoption.
