Billy Porter Is Back 'On The Market'
Porter, whose vibrant personality and unique sense of style have made him a cultural icon, acknowledged that while the end of his marriage has brought about a sense of freedom, it has also brought a mix of emotions.
In a recent interview with the Evening Standard, he spoke openly about the complexity of navigating life as a single individual after six years of partnership with Adam Smith.
"The whole world knows I'm getting a divorce," he told the news outlet. "Y'all want to talk about my divorce and Ricky Martin's at the same time? We made it as far as we could but we learn, we grow and we live."
The interview, which was held in London, gave Porter "bittersweet" vibes as that was where he proposed to Smith. He noted that he was in the city for "a respite from some other s*it."
"I'm looking forward to the next… adventure," he added. "She's back on the market, looking for an English huzzzband. And you have to spell it just like that: 'Huzzzband.'"
Billy Porter Says He'll 'Always Love' Smith
In a poignant moment during the interview, Porter expressed that he will always hold love for his ex-husband, Smith. Despite the challenges and changes that come with divorce, the "Cinderella" actor's heartfelt statement underscored the depth of his connection with Smith and the importance of acknowledging the positive aspects of their past together.
Porter and Smith reportedly met at a dinner party in 2009 and dated briefly. They later got married in January 2017 and went on to see six years of their union together before announcing that they were parting ways last month.
"I can confirm that Billy Porter and his husband, Adam Smith, have made the sad decision to end their marriage after six years," the "Pose" star's rep, Simon Halls, told People magazine.
"The decision was an amicable and mutual one and was made after much consideration. They continue to love and support each other as they embark on this next chapter," Halls added.
Billy Porter Reveals Struggle Amid Ongoing Strikes
In a surprising revelation, Porter disclosed that he is facing the challenging decision to sell his house due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes, which have significantly impacted his income, per the Evening Standard.
The beloved actor and singer shared that he is currently living "check-to-check," highlighting the financial strain caused by the industry-wide labor disputes.
Weighing in on Disney Chief executive, Bob Iger, saying the actor's demands for a living wage are "unrealistic" despite him reportedly making $78,000 a day, Porter noted that he has kept his mouth shut all the while because he's "enraged."
"I have to sell my house," he said. "Yeah! Because we're on strike. And I don't know when we're gonna go back [to work]. The life of an artist, until you make f**k-you money — which I haven't made yet — is still cheque-to-cheque."
He Doesn't Get Paid For 'Pose' Repeats
Adding another layer to the financial challenges he's currently navigating, the "Anything's Possible" actor revealed that he doesn't receive additional compensation for the repeats of the hit show "Pose" being aired, per the Evening Standard.
Despite the show's popularity and widespread viewership, Porter's revelation highlighted an aspect of the entertainment industry that often goes unnoticed – the lack of residual income for reruns, which according to him, is one of the reasons they're striking.
"I'm not trying to get any sympathy, this is the truth of it, my residual checks were six cents," he said. "I'm still an artist, and artists are still freelance workers. So Pose has been over now since 2021, I don't get no more money from that."
He continued, "I'm supposed to, which is why we're striking. I'm supposed to be getting money from that, but I ain't."
The actor also noted that he still has to worry about "paying" his bills as he does a music tour.
"I'm very successful, and I'm paid cheque to pay cheque. Still, I have not made f**k money just yet, soon, but not just yet," Porter shared.
