A recent college graduate shared her story on TikTok of being scammed by a job offer she found on LinkedIn. The now viral video explains exactly what happened in the hopes that others won't fall for the same thing in the future.
TikToker Jenn Shares Her Story So Others Can Be Aware Of Job Scams
"I just graduated, and I've been looking for jobs. I'm interviewing, I've been applying. It was all I did, and I got, I was going through an interview process," she began her TikTok video. "So I went through an interview process. They were going through an app called 'Wired' and I had even asked when I first was interviewing, 'Hey, why not through Zoom or like just on a call?"
They told her it was just their process that they do for remote work with their company because they are international. Jenn was okay with that at the time. She said the interview process was simple and short, and she got an offer.
"It was a really, really good offer. And I looked up all the things," she continued. "It's called Bold Business, by the way."
She continued to say she got an offer letter and contract like many other jobs would do. She was going through the onboarding process and was told they would get her a laptop, phone and printer. As she's talking about the situation, she said she realizes how bad it all sounds, but she had been applying for so long and felt desperate.
"They sent me a check for ordering my stuff," she said. "She was like, 'Hey, I know a person who can get it for cheaper. You'll get an older model, and so just send it to this person the money.'"
She sent the money through Zell and was told that her stuff will be sent out shortly.
"I'm sitting here minding my own business. I made dinner. I get an email saying hey your account is in insufficient funds," she continued. "The check went through, everything was set, I had like $2,400 in my account for all the needed stuff and I look and I think the check bounced."
Never experiencing a check bouncing, she was guessing that was what happened. And because the check bounced, it used the money that was already in her account. She immediately transferred funds from her other account to the negative one.
She reported the business as a scam, let them know what happened, and screen recorded all of their conversations.
"Watch out for Bold Business. They have a lot of opportunities. Don't fall for it," she said. "LinkedIn is full of scams. Please be careful, take this as my warning. I lost some money and I literally requested it back on Zell and said, ' Hey, I really needed this job, can you please send me this money back?"
Many TikTok Viewers Had Messages For Jenn After Watching Her Warning
Jenn's video quickly went viral on TikTok and has more than 6 million viewers so far, and 14,000 comments.
"I’m so sorry this happened. Please post about this on LinkedIn," one person wrote. Another added, "I’m so sorry girl. I work for a remote IT company and we always ship laptops, printers, etc directly to the end user. We Never ask them to purchase. 🥺"
Some people shared their stories of similar experiences.
"The same thing happened with me. Not with bold business but with another company. It shows how desperate we are for jobs and to be great," one viewer shared.
Another person wrote, "This exact thing happened to my daughter's friend! She actually quit her job for this job and lost so much money and couldn’t get her old job back."
Many others dropped into the comment section to support Jenn and send her some positive words.
"I’m so sorry this happened girl. Don’t beat yourself up sister, ❤️" one viewer wrote in the comments. Another added, "I'm so sorry this happened to you. But I’m proud that you have the strength and courage to put your story out there to help and warn others."
Jenn Shared Some Updates On TikTok
Jenn shared a part two to thank everyone for all the comments, support and the opportunities some sent her. After summarizing the last video and the unfortunate situation she was faced with, she explained that she's been looking for a job for so long that when the offer came in, she immediately accepted it. She also said she's accepted her loss. Because she sent the money through Zell, she said there's no way to get that money back.
"If you're ever sending any money, always send through Venmo just because there's a little tab that says buyer protection, and it's like more guarantee that you can get your money back if you were ever in a scam or were in the process of being frauded," she explained. "I just want to say thank you to so much people who sent me all the opportunities. I have been applying to jobs all day, and I'm hoping to get something just because the market is absolutely crazy right now."
A third part goes further into detail about the situation and the update.
"So I got off the phone with Bank of America and I just filed my claim. We're going through with it," she said. "They said it's gonna take about 10 days for them to get back to me."
There may also be more research required so it could take longer before there is any type of resolution.
She also created a LinkedIn post warning others about her story, so they don't fall into the same trap.
She also shared a screenshot of the company and the person who interviewed her.
A fourth part gives some more information and said that Bold Business is not the actual scammer. See video HERE.
