The tragic passing of Iyanla's youngest child comes years after the mom of three lost her first child, Gemma Vanzant, to colon cancer in 2003. Iyanla spoke to Oprah Winfrey during an episode of "Super Soul Sunday" months after Gemmia had been laid to rest.

During the heart-to-heart discussion, she revealed that she read the journals her daughter had kept for ten years, noting that the messages greatly impacted her. She told Winfrey, "It saved my life. Because I was ready to leave out of there, I have had so much pain in my life I didn't think I could sustain another hour."
Reading out some of the messages in the journal, she stated, "Father... I know you have ordained me to do great things. I even know that I will not be able to do some of the things you have planned for me in this body. This body is just physical. The greatness you have for me is spiritual. A nature I may never find in this body."
Speaking highly of Gemmia, Iyanla referred to her as "my greatest spiritual teacher" and revealed that reading those words helped bring her peace. The spiritual life coach added, "That said to me, she understood this."
The 'Yesterday I Cried' Author Shared The Secret To Navigating A Tragedy
Judging from the series of past events, Iyanla has been dealt a fair share of life's trauma and has often spoken about healing from agonizing experiences.
During an interview with MSNBC in 2022, the inspirational speaker shared life-changing wisdom on overcoming personal setbacks and life crises. She instructed:
"Give yourself permission to have the initial shock and horrification of whatever the change is โ the loss of a job, a divorce, even a health crisisโฆ I think what happens is we try to, you know, push through it. No, no, no! Stay there for a couple of hours, even a day or so, and then I promise you it is one step at a time."
The author noted, "sometimes you'll fall over, and sometimes you'll stumble ahead, and sometimes you can barely get up." She continued, "It's one step at a time, and you may not know where that step will lead youโฆ Your daily spiritual practice is your ticket, whatever you're going into, whatever you're coming out of โ your daily spiritual practice: centering, grounding, breathing, listening, trusting."
Concluding on an inspiring note, Iyanla instructed, "One step at a time. That's the only way you can do it because you cannot rush through it."
