Musician Sinéad O'Connor has died at 56. The "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer's passing reportedly happened on Tuesday night, per our report on her death.

O'Connor rose to fame in the early 1990s with her passionate cover of the Prince song. The famous music video featured only a closeup of O'Connor's face as she sheds a single tear at the end.

O'Connor has retreated from the spotlight in recent years. The singer lost her son to suicide in January of last year. Her last tweet had been in tribute to him.

A fan tweeted a clip of O'Connor on a talk show advocating for families to receive more money tweeted, "rest in peace to sinead o'connor, one of the most beautiful musical voices to come out of our country and an even more incredible voice as an advocate for change. she will forever be missed #sineadoconnor," along with a grey heart emoji.

TV presenter Brandon Courtney tweeted, "I am so deeply saddened to hear that Sinead has died. A human who helped the world see things differently at a personal cost. We owe her a great debt for helping drag Ireland out of a grim past & making it relevant on the world stage. RIP #SineadOConnor"

"How To Be Alone" author Lane Moore paid tribute to O'Connor on Instagram. She wrote, "ugh Sinead O'Connor meant so much to me. Her music was angry and unflinching in a way that allowed me to be, and I hate so much how often she was belittled as "crazy" just for speaking out about abuse. She struggled so hard to stay in this world, and wrote some truly stunning songs that I revisit all the time. I hope she gets the peace she deserved.?"
