Acclaimed film writer Greta Gerwig, known for her exceptional work in films like "Lady Bird" and "Little Women," took on the ambitious task of bringing the iconic Mattel toy, Barbie, to life on the big screen. The live-action adaptation was a resounding success, garnering critical acclaim and smashing numbers at the box office.

During a recent interview with The New York Times, Gerwig expressed her thoughts on the potential of a sequel, seemingly noting that there wouldn't be any in the works, at least not for now.

Gerwig stated, "At this moment, it's all I've got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I'll never have another idea, and everything I've ever wanted to do, I did."

Fans of the iconic Barbie doll may have reason to celebrate as the possibility for a potential sequel to the "Barbie" film may still see the light of day.

Margot Robbie, who brilliantly portrayed the titular doll in the movie and also served as a producer, hinted in a recent interview with Time Magazine at the possibility of a follow-up film, although nothing is official.

"It could go a million different directions from this point," the actress told the publication in June. "But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels."

As talks about a potential sequel to the hit movie "Barbie" continue, Gerwig finds herself at the center of controversy, facing criticism from right-wing Barbie detractors who say, "It's an invitation for everybody to be part of the party."

In her interview with NYT, the acclaimed filmmaker was asked if she "anticipated the degree to which right-wing pundits are bashing the movie as being 'woke' and burning their Barbies."

"Certainly, there's a lot of passion," she responded. "My hope for the movie is that it's an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren't necessarily serving us as either women or men."

She added, "I hope that in all of that passion if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people."

Gerwig also addressed criticism regarding Mattel's level of creative involvement in the film's production during her interview with NYT.

The toy company, which owns the iconic Barbie doll range and served as an executive producer for the movie, has been at the center of discussions surrounding potential interference in the creative process.

What sparked a conversation about the company's interference was a scene in particular where one character described the dolls as "sexist and fascist."

Gerwig clarified the dynamic between her and Mattel to set the record straight.

"It wasn't like I ever got the full seal of approval from [Mattel], like, 'We love it!' I got a tentative, 'Well, OK. I see that you are going to do this, so go ahead and we'll see how it goes,'" she explained.

Gerwig went on, "But that's all you need, and I had faith once it was in there and they saw it that they would embrace it, not fight it. Maybe at the end of the day, my will to have it in was stronger than any other will to take it out."
