James Cameron Clears Up Rumors About An OceanGate Project
James Cameron has finally responded to rumors that he's working on a film or series on the OceanGate Titan submersible tragedy. The words began after a report by The Sun claimed that Cameron is in talks with a streaming network to direct a project exploring the submersible's implosion and death of its five passengers.
I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be.

On Saturday, Cameron took to his official Instagram and Twitter pages to release a statement on the rumors. He said, "I don't usually respond to offensive rumors in the media, but I need to now. I'm NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be."
Cameron is a known submarine enthusiast who directed the famous "Titanic" film 1997. The Academy Award winner also famously traveled to the wreckage of the original ship about 30 times, which is a record number.
Rumors About A James Cameron-led Documentary
After news of the submersible tragedy broke online, reports about Cameron being involved in the project started. A statement by The Sun claimed that an insider had revealed a major streaming giant chose the "Avatar" director to direct the project.
The source said, "The Titan disaster is already being considered a major series for one of the world's biggest streamers — and James is the first choice for director. It is a subject close to his heart."
Cameron had previously spoken about the tragedy after news spread that the five passengers had been presumed dead. He appeared in an interview with ABC News in June, where he talked about the sad event. Cameron revealed that the deep sea diving community had expressed concerns about the safety of the submersible before they went on the trip.
He said, "A number of the top players in the deep submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified."
James Cameron Compares The Titan Sub Disaster To The Titanic
During the interview, Cameron also compared the OceanGate tragedy and the original Titanic tragedy on April 15th, 1912. The "Alita: Battle Angel" director noted that the captain of the Titanic was "repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship" but ignored all warnings.
The result was that over 1500 passengers and crew on the ship sank with it that night. He pointed out that it was the same situation as the OceanGate disaster. Cameron said, "For us, it's a similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded. To take place at the same site with all the diving that's going on worldwide, I think it's just astonishing."
Five People Died In The OceanGate Tragedy
The OceanGate tragedy happened in June when the submersible lost contact with its surface support vessel. The loss of communication triggered a deep search of the surrounding ocean area for several days. It eventually ended when search crews discovered debris from the sub on the ocean floor.
According to a statement by the OceanGate company, the debris was likely caused by a "catastrophic implosion, assumed to be that of Titan." There were five passengers on the submersible who were presumed dead after the discovery of the debris.
They included OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, billionaire Hamish Harding, billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The U.S. Coast Guard has also discovered "presumed human remains," which are currently in analysis and testing.
OceanGate Inc. is a private company based in Washington which provides submersibles for research, ocean tourism, and exploration. The late Rush co-founded the company with Guillermo Söhnlein in 2009.
