Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Docuseries Scores Prestigious Nomination
According to the Daily Mail, the Sussex's controversial Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan" has been nominated for a Hollywood Critics Award in the Best Streaming Nonfiction category.
It comes after the bombshell show, directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Liz Garbus, was unveiled on the streaming platform in two parts in December 2022.
Three episodes were first released for viewers, followed by another three the next week.
Upon its release, "Harry & Meghan" became the streaming platform's biggest documentary debut yet, racking up 81.55 million viewing hours worldwide just four days after its release.
It is also Netflix's second-highest-ranked documentary, with the infamous "The Tinder Swindler" taking the top spot.
Now, it is in competition to win the Critics Award against "Prehistoric Planet 2," "Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss," "Rennervations," "The 1619 Project" and "The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy."
'Harry & Meghan' Tipped To Bag An Emmy Nomination
Landing the Hollywood Critics Award nomination is not the only accolade expected to be accorded to "Harry and Meghan." A recent report has hinted that the docuseries could be in the running to bag a nomination for the prestigious Emmy Awards in the Documentary or Nonfiction series category.
A source told Express, "There is no smoke without fire and to me, I feel there is a good chance that there's a win and a definite chance they will be nominated because it will give the Emmy Awards a lot of press attention on that."
The insider went on to explain that the groundbreaking viewing figures of "Harry & Meghan" merits it to get a nomination after Netflix invested heavily in its production.
The source continued, "I have looked at all of the possible categories and it is the most high-profile documentary series within that category."
What Was 'Harry & Meghan' About?
"Harry & Meghan" gave a never-before-seen insight into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's relationship story, from the pair being introduced in 2016 via a mutual friend on Snapchat to their shocking decision to quit the royal family in 2020.
Also included in the show were several bombshells about the duo's interaction with the senior royals, which hinted at a deeply strained connection between both parties.
"It's an incredible love story set against the context of huge stakes and their journey is a historical event that will be examined for a long time to come," as described by Garbus, per Cosmopolitan.
The controversial documentary was borne of Netflix's $100 million deal with Harry and Meghan, which was signed in 2020 in collaboration with the couple's Archewell Productions.
The deal is also expected to birth another show entitled "Heart of Invictus," which will reportedly follow the lives of physically challenged service members competing at the Invictus Games.
Netflix Will Continue To Work With Prince Harry & Meghan Markle
Last month, Netflix revealed that they are keen on continuing their working relationship with Meghan and her husband, Harry.
"We value our partnership with Archewell Productions…. we'll continue to work together on a number of projects, including the upcoming documentary series Heart of Invictus," a spokesperson for the streaming giant told People magazine.
The statement came in the wake of the couple mutually terminating their deal with music streaming platform Spotify prior to their agreement coming to an end. The deal produced 13 hours of content, mostly focused on Meghan's podcast series, "Archetypes."
On why the deal was terminated, a source speculated that it was due to the podcast not living up to its potential.
"Although 'Archetypes' did well and got a couple of awards, when you go into a deal like this, to have just one series over that course of time is not great," said the source, per Page Six.
