Tom Holland Says He Doesn't Like Hollywood
According to Page Six, Holland, who has rapidly risen to international fame with his charismatic performances and youthful charm, shared his candid thoughts about the entertainment industry.
The 27-year-old actor, who had previously been seen as an enthusiastic and passionate advocate for his craft, took a different tone as he opened up about his personal feelings regarding Hollywood and the entertainment industry, stating it is "not for him."
In a candid interview on Jay Shetty's "On Purpose" podcast, Holland said that he loves making movies but that he finds the business side of Hollywood to be "scary."
"Look, I really am a massive fan of making movies, but I really do not like Hollywood, it is not for me," he admitted. "The business really scares me. I understand that I'm a part of that business, and I enjoy my kind of interactions with it."
Holland continued, "But that said, I am always looking for ways to kind of remove myself from it, to kind of just live as normal a life as possible."
"Today, doing this [podcast] is a very rare thing for me to do," he added, likening Shetty's platform to a "safe space" for him to be vulnerable.
Tom Holland Reveals What He Loves Doing
In addition to expressing his dissatisfaction with the entertainment industry, Holland went on to reveal the things he loves doing and would protect, shedding light on his interests and values.
The actor revealed that he finds solace in his family and friends, who provide him with a sense of normalcy and support outside the industry. He emphasized the importance of his loved ones' presence in his life, stating, "I just am really, really keen to focus on what makes me happy, which is my family, it's my friends. It's my carpentry, my golf, the charity that my mom runs."
"Like, that is the stuff that makes me really happy, and that's the stuff that I should protect," he added.
Furthermore, Holland expressed his unwillingness to lose himself to the entertainment business like some of his other industry friends.
"I've seen so many people come before me and lose themselves, and I've had friends that I've grown up with that aren't friends of mine anymore because they've lost themselves to this business," the actor stated.
Tom Holland Discusses His Alcohol Addiction
Elsewhere in his conversation with Shetty, Holland opened up about his struggles with alcohol addiction when trying to be sober for a month and how he overcame it.
Holland said that he first realized he had a problem with alcohol when "all I could think about was having a drink."
"I was waking up thinking about it," he said. "I was checking the clock … And it just really scared me."
"Maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing. So I sort of decided to punish myself and say, I'll do February as well. I'll do two months off," he added.
He Is Taking A Break From Acting
The "Cherry" actor recently announced that he is taking a break from acting after his latest role in the Apple TV+ series "The Crowded Room." Holland said that the role, which saw him play a man with dissociative identity disorder, was a "tough one."
"We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure," he said in an interview with Extra TV.
Holland said that the role took a toll on his health and that he felt the need to take a break from acting.
"I'm now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was," he noted.
