The new film is based on the character from Roald Dahl's beloved children's book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." "Wonka" will depict the origin story of the inventor, magician, and chocolate-maker from the book. The new film comes from filmmaker Paul King, who previously wrote and directed the beloved "Paddington" and "Paddington 2" films." It's also produced by David Heyman ("Harry Potter," "Gravity," "Fantastic Beasts," "Paddington"), Alexandra Derbyshire, and Luke Kelly. King directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with "Paddington 2" co-writer Simon Farnaby, based on a story composed by King and the characters of Dahl.

Chalamet will portray Willy Wonka in his youth, as the young man becomes determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time in order to prove that the best things in life start with a dream, and those who are lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka learn that anything is in fact possible.

The film also boasts an impressive cast, including Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key ("Key & Peele," "Schmigadoon"), Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins ("The Shape of Water," "Paddington"), Rowan Atkinson ("Johnny English," "Mr. Bean"), Jim Carter, and Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman (Marvel's "Secret Invasion," "The Favourite").

The new trailer also reveals that none other than Hugh Grant ("Paddington 2," "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves") will portray an Oompa Loompa in the film. So, it looks like the film will reveal how Wonka meets his first Ooma Loompa as well.

While it's inspired by Dahl's original book, the film looks to be visually taking some cues from the classic 1971 "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" starring Gene Wilder. Even the Oompa Loompa portrayed by Grant looks closer to the Oompa Loompas from that film, and he even plays a similar tune on a flute as Wilder did in that film before he looks like he's about to break out in a traditional Oompa Loompa dance and song.

This is not the first "Willy Wonka" or "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" movie produced by Warner Bros. In 2005, Warner Bros. released "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," starring Johnny Depp in the role of Wonka, directed by Tim Burton ("Batman," "Sleepy Hollow"). The film was a success at the time, grossing $206 million domestically and $474 million worldwide.

Burton's film shared little resemblance to the 1971 feature with Wilder, and his take was more faithful to Dahl's original novel. The 2005 film also shared its own depiction and origin story of both Willy Wonka, and the Oompa Loompas, so it's interesting that "Wonka" appears to be starting over from scratch and taking more cues from the Wilder version, which was directed by Mel Stuart and had Dahl as the credited screenwriter.

"Wonka" is due to arrive in theaters and in IMAX on December 15 in North America. It will also be released internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures in theaters and IMAX in December.
