US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on the Food and Drug Administration to probe and investigate PRIME, an energy drink backed by high-profile YouTubers and internet personalities KSI and Logan Paul.
The duo announced and released the caffeine-free Prime Hydration drink in 2022 and launched the caffeinated Prime Energy drink in January this year. However, one of the beverages is attracting accusations and scrutiny from lawmakers and health experts over its potentially dangerous levels of caffeine.
US Senator Asks Regulators To Look Into KSI And Logan Paul's Energy Drink
Prime Energy contains 200mg of caffeine per can, around twice the amount in rival energy drink Red Bull. Plus, each drink carries a caution stating that it is not recommended for children under the age of 18 and people sensitive to caffeine, such as pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.
Although the brand seems to dot all its Is and cross its Ts, Sen. Chuck Schumer, on Sunday, raised parents' awareness about the drink and the high amount of caffeine it contains. He alleged the drink is being distributed to children despite its high caffeine content per BBC News.
The Democrat leader also told reporters in New York that Prime Energy was packaged and marketed "in near identical form" as a caffeine-free drink from the brand— As a result, many customers have mistakenly bought the caffeinated drink for their children instead.
The US lawmaker later wrote on Twitter, "The FDA [Food and Drug Administration] must investigate PRIME for its absurd caffeine content and its marketing targeting kids on social media." The beverage company has yet to comment or respond to the News Outlet.
Shortly after the YouTubers had beef in the ring, they joined forces to launch the Prime Energy drink on Jan. 4. It became the latest beverage in the Prime line — which began with Prime Hydration, a replenishing drink with antioxidants, electrolytes, and B vitamins.
All Five Flavors Sold Out Within One Hour Upon Initial Release
The energy drink, per Yahoo, is a flavored caffeinated energy drink, sugar-free and vegan. It contains 200 milligrams of caffeine and 300 milligrams of electrolytes. When the drink launched, the public favored it, so they lined up at stores to snag a can.
At the time, it was released exclusively through the company's website, but all five flavors— ICE POP, STRAWBERRY WATERMELON, BLUE RASPBERRY, TROPICAL PUNCH, and ORANGE MANGO— sold out within an hour.
Now, the drink is available for sale at GNC, Kroger, Ralph's, Target, CVS, Walmart Supercenters, Sam's Club, and The Vitamin Shoppe.
