Swift's third record famously includes a track called "Dear John" which has been famously rumored to be about Mayer, who Swift briefly dated in her late teens.

The track "Could've Would've Should've" from Swift's most recent LP, "Midnights," is thought to include a reference to their relationship in the song's bridge.

Swift was seemingly keen to keep the song's subject quiet back in 2010. The "Speak Now" singer addressed the concept of a 'Dear John' letter in a post on her website.

"The song 'Dear John' is sort of like the last email you would ever send to someone you used to be in a relationship with. Usually, people write this venting last email to someone and they say everything that they want to say to that person, and then they usually don't send it. I guess by putting this song on the album I am pushing send," she wrote, per Captial FM.
