Bowen Yang is taking a much-needed mental health break to deal with traumatic abuse from his parents early on in his life.
Bowen Yang Suffering In Silence
The comedian shared the brave decision with his followers via an Instagram Story posted over the weekend.
“Taking a concise break from [‘Las Culturistas’]. Bad bouts of Depersonalization are f–king me up bad, but I am doing my best to improve!”
He ended his message, indicating that he won’t be gone too long. “Please take care, be soon.” Yang has shared details from his past that would suggest that he is a candidate for someone suffering from Depersonalization.
It flares up in people who have past trauma, and Yang has some trauma. He has joked about it, but it is a real issue he has dealt with.
Bowen Yang Was Sent To Conversion Camp
A few years back, Yang shared that his parents had sent him to a gay conversion camp. In PEOPLE magazine's 2021 Sexiest Man Alive issue, Yang detailed the horrific account. “Neither side really understood where the other was coming from, and it led to hazardous situations overall,” he said of the revelation that he is gay and how his parent felt.
It did not lead to hate between Yang and his parents. “What was always constant was the intention of love from both sides.” He continued. “It pushed me into questioning what it meant, what was protected, and what I should be protective about as a queer person. I don’t take it for granted.”
To this day, he feels a sense of “humility” around his fame. Even being the first Asian-American and openly gay comic on Saturday Night Live doesn’t subside it.
‘Las Culturistas’ Is A Hit
The top-rated podcast is co-hosted with Matt Rogers and has been on since 2016. The duo often gets a-list celebs as guests and has only improved since his and Rogers’ rise in fame.
No word on when the podcast will return, but as Yang has mentioned, he will be back soon. The last guest they had on the show was Kelly Clarkson. The singer dished on her divorce and laughed it up with the guys in the studio.
The duo also slayed on Watch What Happens Live last week, where Yang was in great spirits and appeared excited to hear his two cents on Raquel Leviss and Sandoval.
