"I was like, 'This is crazy!' Because James Bond… We're all actors and we understand that role. It's one of those coveted [roles]," Elba explained.

"Being asked to be James Bond was like, 'Okay, you've sort of reached the pinnacle,'" he continued. "That's one of those things the whole world has a vote in."

The "Luther" actor recognized the significance of the Bond character and how his potential portrayal was a "huge compliment." However, he also acknowledged the challenges and complexities that arise when race becomes the focal point of the conversation.

"Those that weren't happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting because it became about race. It became about nonsense, and I got the brunt of it," Elba shared.

"It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation. I'm not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I'm talking about different cultures, they always go 'Bond,' and I feel it is beyond me at this junction," he added. "It's beyond me. You know, it's not a question of, 'Should I? Do I? Will I?' It is what the will of the nation dictates sometimes."
