Titan Might Have Imploded After Losing Communication

The search for the Titan began several hours after it lost communication with its mother ship, Polar Prince, approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive last Sunday.

There was a glimmer of hope that the submersible would be found before it ran out of oxygen, estimated to last around 96 hours. However, it appears that the vessel even imploded before the expiration of that time, making the rescue search futile.

Per Reuters, the U.S. Navy, which was also involved in the search, revealed that an analysis of its acoustic data had detected "an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion" around the area where the Titan lost communications with its mother ship.

The "information was immediately shared" with the heads of the search mission, although it is unclear if it helped locate the vessel's debris.

Per a report from the Daily Beast, various sources expressed grim prospects for the survival of the individuals aboard the Titan.

Among those voices was Butch Hendrick, an expert in deep-water rescue, who also speculated that the heightened anxiety levels experienced by the submersible's occupants could have accelerated oxygen depletion.

He also pointed out that the Titan had never met international safety standards and lacked a locator beacon, which would have been instrumental in aiding rescuers in locating the submersible.

The vessel's safety also came under scrutiny from individuals who had previously utilized it for underwater missions, with one calling the tragic expedition a "suicide mission."
