After millions of listeners had likely branded Jepsen as a one-hit wonder with 2012's "Call Me Maybe," Jepsen had gone on to release several cult classic albums including "Emotion" and "Dedicated."

Jepsen's next album would coincide with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. She would begin creating "The Loneliest Time" during a period when many of us were collectively thinking about spending endless time alone. For Jepsen, the focus of living 'The Loneliest Time" meant coming to terms with being someone who feels every feeling quite differently.

She discussed the concept with The Cut upon the album's release.

"It's been a lifelong inquiry that I've had with myself about my relationship with loneliness," Jepsen told the publication per The Blast, "The idea that you have to be lonely with yourself- like, 'Go be alone and be happy'- that's b*lls**t to me. You become really happy when you know you have connections out there," she said.

Jepsen would go on to note "Loneliness is a similar thing to love. It's felt everywhere by everyone at different moments in their life."
