Earlier this month, Shannon Amos created a GoFundMe for her father. She claimed that the 83-year-old actor was fighting for his life in the ICU. She said that he was a victim of elder abuse and needed money for legal assistance and medical support. She had been asking for $500,000, but the GoFundMe only raised over $13,000 from 300 people before it was taken down.

A spokesperson for GoFundMe told TMZ that the GoFundMe had been taken down because Amos turned down the money. “Ensuring that donors’ intentions are honored is our top priority. However, upon being informed that Mr. Amos wished to decline the funds raised on his behalf, the GoFundMe was put under review by our Trust & Safety team and then removed from our platform,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The money is reportedly being given back to the donors. Many people contributed small amounts of money, such as $10 to $20, but one donor pledged $500 to help the actor through his struggles.

Shortly after the GoFundMe was created, John Amos released a statement to TMZ saying that the GoFundMe was “a lie” and claimed that he had never been fighting for his life in the ICU. He stated that he had no idea why his daughter would create a GoFundMe for him.

A week later, a representative for the actor told People magazine that the actor is “doing well” and passed along a statement from the actor himself. “To all of my fans, I want you to know that I am doing well. I am not in ICU, nor was I ever fighting for my life,” the statement read. “First, I want the GoFundMe campaign about me to stop immediately and the funds subsequently returned to those who made donations. My son and I will reveal more information at the appropriate time.”

In an Instagram post published on June 8, Shannon claimed, “On May 14th, I would receive a distressing call: from my dad, sharing that he was hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee, in immense pain. Despite being out of the country, I arranged for help to reach him. ICU revealed his life hanging by a thread.”

Although she claims that his life was "hanging by a thread," the actor denied her statements. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate claims of potential elder abuse.
