The REAL Reason Why Demi Lovato Started Using 'She/Her' Pronouns Again Along With 'They/Them'

In a recent announcement, American singer and actress Demi Lovato revealed what made her return to using she/her pronouns after using they/them pronouns.

Lovato, who came out as non-binary in May 2021, has been an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ community, using her platform to raise awareness about gender identity and promote inclusivity. At the time, she desired to be referred to with they/them pronouns, emphasizing the importance of respecting and validating different gender identities.

However, in a recent interview with GQ Hype Spain, Lovato, 30, shared her personal challenges while using they/them pronouns. The continuous need to explain her gender identity and educate others on the significance of non-binary pronouns took a significant emotional toll on her, ultimately leading the "Tell Me You Love Me" singer to reassess her pronoun usage.

"I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was exhausting," Lovato told the Spanish news outlet People magazine. "I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know it is important to continue spreading the word."

In addition to her decision to switch back to she/her pronouns, Lovato expressed her desire for a more gender-neutral space that fosters inclusivity and acceptance. The multi-talented artist believes that creating such an environment is crucial to accommodate individuals who identify outside of the traditional gender binary.

Lovato's journey of self-discovery and exploration of gender identity has provided her with firsthand experience of the challenges faced by non-binary individuals. Through her advocacy work, she has consistently emphasized the importance of acknowledging and respecting diverse gender identities.

"I face this every day, for example, in public toilets. Having to access the women's bathroom, even though I don't completely identify with it," Lovato shared.

She continued, "Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you must specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me."

Lovato added, "I see myself conditioned to choose a woman because there are no more. I think this has to change. Hopefully, with time there will be more options."

According to the publication, Lovato also reflected on the positive impact of her efforts. The singer-songwriter expressed gratitude and optimism for the progress in raising awareness and promoting acceptance of diverse gender identities.

"It will be worth it as long as there are people who tell me that I am an inspiration to them or that I have helped them learn more about themselves and feel more comfortable in their skin," said Lovato in the interview, translated from Spanish to English. "That's the most meaningful thing to me."

She continued, "There are queer couples who have gotten engaged at my concerts, and that's special."

As Pride Month takes center stage worldwide, the singer and LGBTQ+ advocate joined the celebration, spreading a message of encouragement and empowerment to the community. Lovato, an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, took to social media to express her support and appreciation for the diverse and vibrant community.

I'm so happy to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community today and every day!! "And for anyone navigating their sexual orientation and gender journey, know that you are all extraordinary and exactly who you're supposed to be," she continued. "Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
