Singer Britney Spears and her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, have both spoken out against a new report that claims that the 41-year-old pop star is "on meth."
Britney, Britney's ex-husband, and Britney's lawyer all spoke out against the drug abuse allegations over the weekend; however, on Monday, the journalist who first reported the story said that the quote about Britney being "on meth" is "accurate."
Kevin Federline Slams Journalists For Deciding To 'Fabricate Lies'
On Saturday, June 10, the Daily Mail released a new report that quoted Kevin Federline as saying, “I fear she’s on meth – I’ve been praying someone would make it public and that she wakes up,” adding that their two teenage sons “have seen drugs being delivered to her house.”
A few hours later, Kevin Federline also took to his Instagram Stories to condemn the report, writing, “It saddens our family that Daphne Barak and Erbil Gunasti have decided to fabricate lies and publish the heart ache our family has endured, along with the trauma of our minor children in the Dail Mail and The Sun. We did allow Daphne & Bill into our home because we trusted them, but that trust was lost and we severed ties back in March for many reasons we choose not to go into here.”
“It is very distressing that she continues to harass our family when we have repeatedly asked her to leave us alone. As was previously published, our family did speak with Ms. Barak and Mr. Gunasti a few times, and this was done in a respectful way with love & compassion for Britney and the Spears family,” Kevin continued. “Her lies and attempts to exploit minors is click bait and another repulsive example of where, unfortunately, certain journalism has sunk today.”
Reporters Insist The Kevin Federline Made The Allegations ‘Clearly And Repeatedly’
On Monday, TMZ reported that the Daily Mail has been spending “months working on a documentary with Kevin, his family, and Britney’s two sons.” K-Fed and Britney share two teenage sons: Sean Preston, 17, and Jayden James, 16.
"Daphne Barak has assured us that the quotes attributed to Kevin and the family are accurate and fairly reflect the interviews conducted, in which Kevin expressed his fears that Britney might be using crystal meth to Daphne and to her producer Erbil Gunasti and members of the film crew. He did so clearly and repeatedly,” a spokesperson for the Daily Mail said in a statement.
"Kevin also made it clear to Daphne that he hoped someone would expose the situation, as he saw it, because that would be the way to get help for Britney,” they continued, alleging that they reached out to Britney’s team for comment on the allegations, but got no response. However, that is not what Britney’s lawyer said in a scathing letter that was published on Sunday.
Britney Spears' Lawyer Condemns Report As 'Defamatory'
On Sunday night, Britney's lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, released a copy of the legal letter he fired off to the Daily Mail with Page Six. In the letter, he claims that Britney nor her team was ever contacted about the documentary that the two had supposedly been working on.
“The Daily Mail, through Daphne Barak, posted a story yesterday containing numerous false and defamatory fabrications concerning my client Britney Spears that are attributed to Kevin Federline and his children, in particular regarding ‘crystal meth,’” Rosengart’s letter read.
“I have separately learnt that on several occasions, Ms. Barak sought to contact Britney under false pretenses, again her minor children, which is exploitative, harassing, and outrageous,” Rosengart continued. “And moreover, Britney’s representatives were never contacted prior to the publication of the story, further demonstrating actual malice and reckless disregard for the truth.”
“Britney is indeed a public figure, but this conduct is beyond the pale and completely unacceptable. It is shoddy even by today’s standards of ‘journalism’ and the unfair scrutiny she has faced,” the letter concluded. “I will follow up separately, but for present purposes, please confirm that the Daily Mail will immediately delete and retract that false and defamatory story and conduct an internal investigation regarding this matter and the abuse of Britney and her children.”
