Lil Wayne Says He Can't Differentiate Between His Songs Or Albums
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lil Wayne opened up about his challenge; his songs and albums have become a hazy blur in his memory.
In a candid discussion with the publication, published on Friday, the New Orleans-born rapper confessed that he struggles to differentiate between his iconic albums like "Tha Carter III," "Tha Carter II," "Tha Carter One," and "Tha Carter IV."
Surprisingly, Wayne's memory lapses extend beyond merely identifying his albums. The Grammy-winning artist confessed when asked about specific songs, per Page Six. "And that's just my God's truth. You could lie, ask me [about] such and such song; I wouldn't even know what we are talking about."
Lil Wayne Describes His Hazy Memory As The 'Gift And The Curse'
"The Formula" rapper shed more light on the extent of his memory loss, revealing that he even struggled to remember the release dates of his albums, citing "Tha Carter III" as a prime example. "That's how much I don't know," he admitted.
Reflecting on the possible reasons behind his memory lapses, Wayne offered an intriguing perspective. "I work every day, bro — every single day," he explained. The chart-topper then delved into the duality of his situation, stating, "I always look at it as the curse part of the gift and the curse."
While his memory may be imperfect, Wayne recognizes that his exceptional talent and creativity are divine blessings responsible for his string of successful hits. "I believe that [God] blessed me with this amazing mind but would not give [me] an amazing memory to remember this amazing sh*t," he said.
The Rapper's Health Challenges
Wayne's journey has been marked by a history of health challenges, most notably his ongoing battle with epilepsy. In 2013, Wayne was hospitalized after experiencing a series of seizures. During that time, speculation arose that his use of sizzurp, a recreational beverage mixed with cough syrup, may have played a role in these incidents, per the Los Angeles Times.
In 2017, the rapper had to cancel a show in Las Vegas due to multiple seizures, an incident that resulted in him being found unconscious in his Chicago hotel room, according to Rolling Stone.
However, despite these struggles, the "Sucker for Pain" rapper remains determined to continue forging ahead. "The motivation isn't to show them that I'm still that dude, which I am," he explained in his recent discussion with the magazine.
He added, "The motivation is to show them why I'm still that dude. That's the motivation because I want [rappers of the new generation] to get something from that, hopefully, and they continue to be still whoever the dude or woman they are."
Lil Wayne Teases 'Verzuz Battle' With Himself
For quite some time now, fans have eagerly requested Wayne's participation in the "Verzuz battle," where artists showcase their musical prowess against one another. However, in his chat with Rolling Stone, the five-time Grammy Award-winning hitmaker revealed that if he were to partake in the show, there's only one opponent he would consider facing, himself.
The "Lollipop" rapper expressed his interest in pitting his alter egos against each other, particularly the dynamic clash between "Mixtape Weezy" and "Lil Wayne," stating, "I was interested in Mixtape Weezy going against Lil Wayne."
Wayne acknowledged the sheer excitement it would bring, concluding, "That would have been crazy… What other artists do you think? There isn't any other artist that can stand on the stage next to me, bro. I'm sorry."
