Salma Hayek Shares Ways To Make A Difference On World Oceans Day

Actress Salma Hayek is hoping that she can make a difference on World Oceans Day.

The "House of Gucci" actress took to Instagram to share a video of the ocean's beauty with her 24.4 million followers while recommending a few ways that they can make a difference.

In a mesmerizing Instagram video set to Billie Eilish’s hit song, “Ocean Eyes,” the “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” actress shared a stunning video of some of the various marine life found in the deep blue sea, including fish, sharks, and sea turtles.

“This #WorldOceansDay let’s reflect on our power to protect the ocean’s beauty,” she wrote in the caption. Here are three ways you can make a difference today: Say no to single-use plastics; Properly dispose of waste and recycle; Participate in community clean-up events. Together, we can make a difference.”

She repeated her message in Spanish, writing, “Este #DíaMundialDeLosOcéanos reflexionemos sobre nuestro poder para proteger la belleza de los océanos. Aquí hay tres maneras en que puede marcar la diferencia hoy: Di no a los plásticos de un solo uso; Disponer correctamente los residuos y reciclar; Participa en eventos comunitarios de limpieza. Juntos podemos hacer la diferencia.”

“Well said. Amazing,” one fan commented, although not everyone was supportive of her post. “Fossil fuel companies and billionaires are responsible for what is going on in our oceans. Hold them accountable because pollution and climate change SYSTEMATIC problem caused by corporations and wasteful rich families who have [consolidated] all the wealth, not something that poor individuals can correct,” one user wrote. “Please shut up until you are willing to do the work and hold your rich friends accountable and your spouse too.”

Although June 8 is World Oceans Day, World Environment Day is held only a few days earlier each year on June 5. The 56-year-old actress also took to Instagram to share several photos with her followers. “This #WorldEnvironmentDay makes me think extra about the future generations and all the wonderful creatures that depend on our choices and it makes me want to try harder,” she wrote in the caption.

She also repeated her message in Spanish, writing, “Este #DíaMundialDelMedioAmbiente me hace pensar más en las futuras generaciones y en todas las maravillosas criaturas que dependen de nuestras decisiones y me anima a hacer un mayor esfuerzo.” One fan loved her photo of her getting up close and personal with an alpaca, writing, “I’m worried that Alpaca might spit!”

“Always one with nature! Absolutely amazing! We love you!!!!” one fan commented. “There really are so many wonderful beings in this world. We should not forget about them,” another follower wrote. “Her love for animals is so beautiful!” a third fan chimed in.

However, this post was also met with criticism. “Maybe urging other artists to fly commercial rather than private jets that also contribute to the carbon footprint. All for the planet, right?” one user asked. “I was thinking the same,” another follower wrote. One user ventured, “Salma will use private jets until that ozone layer disintegrates.”

On June 5, the Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen also took to Instagram to share photos of her interacting with nature. “Mother Nature is our greatest teacher,” she wrote in the caption. “She shows us that everything is interconnected and interdependent. Her power comes from her diversity and it depends on it for its survival. Just like with people, our differences are our strengths, and we get stronger when we work together.”

“Nature doesn’t judge or divide. She nurtures. She reminds us that every form of life is sacred, and important, and has its own special role in creating balance, so all of life can flourish,” she continued. “Nature has the answers--and by observing her, and mirroring back her example, we can all thrive. This is our home, and our choices create our future.”
