While the movie made $760 million worldwide, Marvel fans were bothered by the tone of the film. Specifically, the exuberant amount of humor and the special effects used in the movie turned fans off.

Initially, writer-director Taika Waititi was praised for turning around the dreary franchise with the success of Thor: Ragnarök, but now, fans believe he went too far in the fourth and final installment.

Hemsworth feels the same way and is now opening up about the unintentional action comedy. “I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly,” he told GQ magazine. His opinion becomes more robust as he becomes aware of how unhappy the fans are.

The actor admits he struggled to get past how upset fans were. “It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective…I love the process; it’s always a ride. But you don’t know how people are going to respond.”

Hemsworth said his harshest critiques came from his children. “It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humor, the action was cool, but the VFX weren’t as good,’” he recalls the critiques.

“I cringe and laugh equally at it.” thankfully, the actor is done with the franchise. After eight films, the fourth Thor film is considered his final film. He isn’t against doing more movies, but his contract is up.

Hemsworth is excited to try on different roles and isn’t so sad that his time with the franchise has ended. He wants to do “some other stuff for a while.” If or when Marvel comes calling again, he will be there.

“I love the experience,” he says. “I love that I’ve been able to do something fairly different throughout the process. ‘Thor 1’ and 2 were their own thing, ‘Thor 3’ and 4 were a very different feel,” he recalls.

“And then even ‘Avengers,’ the Lebowski Thor, the ‘Infinity War’ Thor, due to different directors, and I think mostly my own need to do something different.”

Like many, Hemsworth has shared that he is a franchise fan and has even watched some of the Phase 5 films. “Wakanda Forever” was “really cool.” He hasn’t seen Ant-Man: Quantumania, but it’s on his list.

His favorite part about making these films is when they all come together. “That’s the trick: you must separate all those stories.” But, “The moment it’s like: ‘Your world is in danger, the entire universe!’ It’s like, ‘Yeah, so [it] was the last 24 films.’ It has to become a bit more personal and grounded.”

Now, Hemsworth is focused on family and promoting his upcoming films like the Hulk Hogan bio, the Furiosa prequel, and a sequel to Extraction 2.
