Drew Barrymore Reflects On Strained Relationship With Her Mother Jaid And How It Still Affects Her

Drew Barrymore recently reflected on her relationship with her mother, Jaid.

The actress, who comes from a family of actors, shared in a recent interview that she often wished her mother was dead due to their poor relationship while growing up.

She also noted that she consciously tries not to dwell on her past and is not attracted to people who blame others. In a previous interview, she discussed being sent to a mental institution by her mother at 13.

Speaking with New York Magazine, Hollywood veteran Barrymore was candid about her strained relationship with her mother, Jaid, saying that she "cannot wait" for her to die.

As part of the revelation, the actress, who had a troubled childhood living with her mother, shared that she often wonders why her mother is still alive while her friends' moms "are gone."

She said, per Daily Mail, "All their moms are gone, and my mom's not. I don't have that luxury. But I cannot wait."

Barrymore expressed that even though she has complicated feelings towards her mother, she doesn't want to be in a place where she wishes for someone's premature passing just for her personal growth.

She added, "I want her to be happy, thrive, and be healthy. But I have to f**king grow despite her being on this planet."

Doubling down on her remark, Barrymore said about her mother, "I'll not care. I don't know if I've ever known how to fully guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up."

She also shared that she doesn't dwell on her past hurts or blame others for those ordeals. "I choose very consciously not to see my life as things that have been done to me," the actress said. "I want to see it as the things I did and chose to do. I'm not attracted to people who lay blame on others. I don't find it sexy."

However, growing up under such conditions has emotionally affected Barrymore, who said she wishes she could give herself a "f**king break."

She remarked, "I've been a circus bear my whole life. I swear to God, if the ringmaster left the tent, I would become the ringmaster and start flagellating myself."

She noted during the conversation that her mother "exploited" her and sent her to a mental institution at 13. Describing that time as her "lowest," Barrymore further revealed that she was "angry" because her "parents" weren't there for her.

On the upside, the actress benefited from her time in the institution, saying it gave her "an amazing discipline."

She said, "It was like serious recruitment training and boot camp, and it was horrible and dark and very long-lived, a year and a half, but I needed it.

"I needed that whole insane discipline. My life was not normal. I was not a kid in school with normal circumstances. There was something very abnormal, and I needed some severe shift."

Upon her exit from the institution after 18 months, Barrymore emancipated herself from her mother and started life on her own.

Today, she is a multi-hyphenate, with her talent helping her spread her tentacles to show hosting, acting, producing, and authoring.

In 2013, she started a range of cosmetics under the Flower banner, which now includes lines in perfume, hair products, and eyewear. She has also expanded into other homeware, wine, and clothing business ventures.

Over the years, she has garnered several accolades for acting, including a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She has also received several nominations - seven for the Emmys and one for the British Academy Film Awards.
