Elizabeth Holmes, convicted of fraud with her failed blood test company Theranos is heading to prison today.
Elizabeth Holmes Reporting To FPC Bryan With Jen Shah
The disgraced fraudster will be locked behind bars before the day is over. There are no more appeals or delays; it's time to face the music. She reported to FPC Bryan, and if that name sounds familiar to you, it's because you've been hearing about it a lot lately.
'It’s home to former Real Housewives of Salt Lake City alum Jen Shah. She has been behind bars for a few months for fraud-related crimes. The popular Texas-based federal prison camp is just over an hour outside Houston.
The prison also hosted reformed criminals like Michelle Janavas, made famous for her role in the college admissions scandal; Jenna Ryan, of the people caught in the 2021 Capitol attack; and Lea Fastow, an assistant at Enron and wife to Andrew Fastow, bot pleaded guilty to tax fraud and failing to report over $200,000 in earnings.
Who The Heck Is Elizabeth Holmes?
A quick refresher here. Holmes started a company called Theranos that boasted they could get an in-depth knowledge of the body, including diagnosing significant diseases like cancer and diabetes, all with "one drop of blood."
The scientist around the Ivy League school dropout repeatedly told her it was essentially impossible, and she wasn't the first to try and fail at this idea. Still, the headstrong dropout pushed past perceived hate.
Months and years later, Holmes's company is lying to investors, struggling to produce accurate data, and putting the lives of millions of Americans at risk. She was eventually charged with four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy for falsely claiming that Theranos's blood tests could do precisely what they couldn't do.
Her business partner and sneaky link at the time (she's married mom of two now), Ramesh Balwani, must together pay $452 million in restitution to investors defrauded by her refusal to accept the truth.
Elizabeth Holmes Tried To Stay Out Of Prison
The 39-year-old appealed the court's decision time and time again. Her last successful appeal was last month when she asked and received one more month with her two small children and her husband, Billy Evans.
But times up, Holmes. Today, she will begin her 11-year, three-month sentence. The minimum-security prison has 655 inmates. It's not a vacation either; the women there must work for small pay and follow structure and order within the prison.
The pay starts at $1.15 an hour, according to information on the prison's website. A quick search showed that Holmes's records had not been uploaded to the prison's system yet, but no doubt, like Shah and others, her information, like release date and ways to email or contact her, will be listed.
Elizabeth Holmes Was An Example
The conviction of Holmes shocked many because no one believed that someone running a medical company would be this lazy about their output. The rumbles around Silicone Valley is that Holmes is an example that the "fake it till you make it" logic isn't something to play around with.
Life is about to be very different for Holmes, who has been living it up on her wealthy husband's family money on the grounds of Green Gables on a $135 million estate. Not only will this suck for her, but while waiting for conviction, she deemed it wise to procreate and is now leaving her two kids behind.
It's reported that her young children, William and Invicta, can have video calls with their jailed mother and visit her on weekends and federal holidays. Phone calls can last 15 minutes each, and inmates get 300 minutes per month.
Buckle in for the 11 years and 3-month sentence ahead. For the sake of her kids, hopefully, good behavior can shave off a few years.
