On Thursday morning, the 65-year-old actor wrote up a touching tribute for the late singer that he then shared on his own Instagram page. “Tina Turner died from cancer today. A youthful piece of my life went with her. She always illuminated my soul with her huge talent and part of that light was darkened with her passing,” he wrote in the caption before he went on to recall the first time that he saw her perform on stage.
“I saw her live on November 27th, 1969 at Madison Square Garden when she opened for The Rolling Stones in their first-ever Garden concert. To this day it remains the best concert I’ve ever attended and was lucky enough to photograph,” he wrote. “She picked cotton and sang in a choir as a kid. She withstood abuse from Ike Turner for years before she finally cut him loose. But watching her own the stage that night never hinted at anything but a dedicated, singing, dancing queen who was born into a life of being a phenomenal entertainer.”
“She was a stand-alone star. Ike was like a flea floating somewhere in the sold-out arena. All eyes and ears were only on Tina. If you have not danced with Tina Turner’s music at one time in your life then you have never lived a full life. Do it now!” he concluded. “She will be missed.”
