Joined by his brothers Kevin and Joe, the actor opened up about the unforgettable moment when his guitar solo took an unexpected turn during Kelsea Ballerini’s performance of her chart-topping single “Peter Pan.”
Reflecting on the experience, he admitted that, in hindsight, he can now find humor in how significant he thought it was at the time. However, the incident gained more attention than anticipated, leading him to seek therapy. He stated:
“In retrospect, I can kind of laugh about how big I thought it was. But it did travel more than I wish it would have, and it did cause me to go to therapy.”
Opening up on the “Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard” podcast, he shared that he was initially confident due to the extensive rehearsals leading up to the event. Still, he suddenly found himself unexpectedly facing a mental block as he approached Ballerini on stage.
He explained, “I started, it was fine, and as I walked towards her, I just went completely blank, and I hit a wrong note and blacked out basically and clocked that it was wrong, and I couldn’t stop.”
The award show, which happened amidst his group’s hiatus, left a lasting impression on the father-of-one and shaped his expectations for performances after that. The “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” star confessed that he struggles to fully comprehend what occurred during that fateful momententire.
He recalled that immediately following the mishap, he was hastily taken to a car and rushed onto a plane. Overwhelmed by the event, Jonas noted that he turned to his manager and, with a sense of shock, admitted, “I think that was bad.”
Apart from leaving an indelible mark on him, it became a traumatic moment that influenced the intense pressure he placed upon himself to achieve perfection and maintain a constant state of readiness. In conclusion, he revealed, “I was in shock kinda. Like it was a traumatic moment that shaped the pressure I put on myself to be perfect and always be on.”
