Sarah Hyland Reveals She Had a Second Kidney Transplant, Contemplated Suicide

Sarah Hyland has always been open about her health issues but it turns out there was more to her kidney problems than she ever let her fans know.

Opening up to Self magazine, the "Modern Family" star reveals she underwent a second kidney transplant after the first one proved unsuccessful.

After her body rejected the kidney donated to her by her father, she had a second surgery in September 2017 after he brother donated a kidney.

"When a family member gives you a second chance at life and it fails," she told the magazine, "it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not, but it does."

Once it came time to have the second surgery, Hyland says she went into a dark place.

"I was very depressed," she admitted. "For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn’t want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad."

Talking to a friend helped her through the dark times and she encourages others to do the same.

"For anybody that wants to reach out to somebody but doesn't really know how because they're too proud or they think that they'll be looked upon as weak, it's not a shameful thing to say. It's not a shameful thing to share," Hyland says.
