Actress and model Julia Fox has sensationally lambasted the recently held Met Gala, tagging the soiree as "stale" and exclusionary. Fox alleged that the event had taken a non-inclusive approach towards guests invited in a long time.
She also slammed the Met Gala's host, Anna Wintour, for choosing to honor the late controversial fashion icon, Karl Lagerfeld, noting that he "upheld supremacy and imperialism ideals" while calling for Wintour to step down from her position.
Fox, who divulged that she has never been invited to the star-studded soiree, even though she can be considered a fashion icon in her rights, pointed out that there's a "political" angle to who gets invited to the event.
Read on for more details.
Julia Fox Calls Out The Met Gala For Honoring Lagerfeld
The "No Sudden Move" actress has slammed the Met Gala for paying tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld, a German fashion designer and former creative director of Chanel, who passed away in 2019 at age 85, was honored by the Met Gala dedicating this year's event to his legacy.
According to the Daily Mail, Fox, 33, expressed her disappointment and criticism towards the Met Gala's decision, pointing out that Lagerfeld "upheld supremacy and imperialism ideals."
The controversial fashion icon was accused of making several misogynistic, Islamophobic, and racist comments. He reportedly also body-shamed German supermodel Heidi Klum, saying she was "simply too heavy, with too big a bust," alongside singer Adele, whom he labeled "a little too fat."
Lagerfeld notably trivialized the #MeToo movement, saying he was "fed up" with the accusations of Harvey Weinstein and other industry big shots who were accused of sexual abuse, telling victims to "join a nunnery" instead of making charges.
The fashion industry has long been criticized for lacking diversity and inclusivity. Fox's comments shed light on the issue of honoring controversial figures in the industry, pointing out that the same exclusionary ideals are still being displayed by the Met Gala every year.
"There were no trans people of color or even trans people there," she noted.
'The Met Gala Has Never Spoken To Me'
Despite rising popularity in the entertainment and fashion industry, Fox shared that she has never been invited to the Met Gala, seemingly pointing fingers at the event's host, Anna Wintour.
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The event is known for its high fashion, celebrity guests, and unique themes and is considered one of the most significant fashion events of the year.
However, despite being a well-known personality in the entertainment industry, Fox has yet to receive an invitation to the prestigious event.
"To be honest, the Met Gala has never spoken to me," she noted. "I mean, look at who is running it."
However, the "Uncut Gems" star shared that even if the reverse was to be the case and she got invited, she wouldn't honor it because she doesn't want to support such an over-the-top display of money and privilege.
"If it were about fashion, I'd be there, but it's not," she said, per the Daily Mail. "It's about politics, privilege, who your parents are, and how much money you make."
Julia Fox Calls For Anna Wintour To Step Down
Fox also ripped into Met Gala's host, Anna Wintour, calling for her to step down from her position and to allow "fresh" hands to lead the event to greater heights.
The "PVT Chat" actress alleged that Wintour, who doubles as the editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been using the glitzy soiree as a front for excessive display of "privilege and wealth." She has been the face of the event since 1995 and has been credited with turning it into one of the most highly anticipated fashion occasions.
However, Fox has taken issue with Wintour's continued association with the Met Gala, calling for her to step down to afford "fresh" replacements to guide the event to the modern age.
"She [Anna Wintour] just won't quit - how long is she going to keep going?" the actress quizzed, adding that Wintour's publication has become more about "commerce than art."
Fox added, "There is a disconnect. American Vogue is not my favorite: it needs more fun, fresh, and new energy."
Julia Fox Is Considering Starting A Rival Event
The actress divulged her thoughts of launching a rival event to match the Met Gala, focusing on supporting designers for their work and giving them the much-needed publicity they need.
"I want to support fashion designers. My friends and I are hoping to start our gala and help fund disadvantaged people and single mothers," she said.
Fox added, "I just want to tell people don't aspire to be like these people [who went to the Met], aspire to be yourself. There's a little boy or girl out there who will look at me and not be ashamed. Fashion and art are about vision."
