A TikToker named Amber, who goes by the handle where.is.amber on the platform, is hoping to spread awareness about electric water fountains for pets after her cat was electrocuted and died.
Amber shared two videos on Tuesday explaining what happened to her beloved cat in the hopes that it doesn't happen to anyone else's pet in the future.
Amber Wants People To Be Aware Of The Dangers Of Electric Water Fountains For Pets
In a video shared on TikTok, Amber explains what happened to her "sweet boy."
"Please share to spread awareness, this can happen to anyone at any time," she wrote in her caption of a video that shows photos of her cat. "Our sweet boy didn't deserve this and it's the worst way to lose a baby."
In the first photo in the video, she wrote, "Our baby boy is gone. If you have a water fountain for your cats or this brand specifically, please get rid of it. It's so dangerous. Our boy David was tragically killed by electrocution from this water fountain."
In the second photo, Amber wrote, "This is the most awful feeling, my heart is broken. I was supposed to protect you. Rest easy sweet boy."
Many of Amber's followers left comments about the terrible tragedy.
"SUE THE PANTS OFF THE COMPANY! Your baby deserved better, I’m so sorry for your loss," one person wrote. Another added, "My cats won't drink water unless it's out of their fountain and now I'm terrified😭."
Another follower who also has the same fountain said, "Not me bawling at this while looking at the exact same fountain in my house (unplugged as of rn). My entire heart goes out to you, this is so unfair🥺."
Amber Posted A Follow-Up Video With More Information
In a follow-up video, Amber explains what happened because a lot of people were asking about the fountain and what led to the cat's death.
"I don't know that it's so much the brand, but I think it's just a risk with all electric plug-in water fountains," she said. "I never took into consideration the risk that this could have. But if I could go back, I would totally never get this for my cats ever."
She explained that last night she heard a loud noise and when she went to check, she saw the water fountain tipped on its side with all the water spilled out and her cat unresponsive.
"The water fountain was making noise because it was, the motor was running dry, but it was because it had been tilted over," she said. "And at that point, my cat had died instantly. He was not responsive; he was just gone immediately."
Amber explained that she was not sure if it was a power surge within the circuit or a mechanical issue in the device that "caused the water to become a conductor of electricity." She said they had the filter for two years and never had any issues with it in the past.
While people are telling Amber to sue the company, she said that's not going to do much. She just wants her cat back.
"And mostly I just want to spread awareness that this doesn't happen to anybody else because it's not very common. I've never heard of this happening but there is still that risk that you have," she said. "It's a freak accident and I just don't wish this on anybody to go through. I just wish it didn't have to happen like this, but if I can save anybody from going through it. I hope this helps and I hope that people will see this and switch to a regular water bowl."
Many people left comments thanking Amber for sharing her story.
"By sharing this, you may have just saved a whole lot of kitties in your cat's name ❤️thank you for sharing. I'm so sorry this happened," one person wrote. Another person added, "You may have just saved my cat’s life, I am getting rid of my fountain now. My deepest condolences to you ❤️🩹."
Another follower also said she's getting rid of her fountain. "Thank you for posting this!! We have this exact fountain, have been using it for like 6 months, & I JUST put it in the garage today because I was feeling weird about it out of nowhere. Then I saw your video on my fyp. So sorry for your loss 🤍."
