'Monster' Season 2 Coming To Netflix With The Story Of The Menendez Brothers

Brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez were tried twice for the murder of their parents in the 1990s. The first trial resulted in deadlocked juries. In the second trial, they were both charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Both men were sentenced to life without parole, and they remain in prison to this day. The case became a media television sensation, and it's been frequently documented in narrative dramatized versions and in documentary formats.

This will be the latest installment of Murphy and Ian Brennan's "Monster" anthology series. The show debuted to great acclaim on the streamer last year with "DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." The miniseries starred Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer, focusing on the 17 murders he committed between the years 1978 and 1991.

The series also gave a voice to the next-door neighbor of Dahmer, Glenda Cleveland (Niecy Nash-Betts), who repeatedly tried to warn the authorities about his suspicious behavior but was repeatedly ignored. Nash Betts won a Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Made Movie Made for Television for her work in the series. Meanwhile, Peters took home a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for his performance as Dahmer in the series.

The series exposed Dahmer's crimes, many of which were committed against young gay men of color, centering around the victims and their communities impacted by systemic racism and the institutional failures of the police. This enabled one of the country's most notorious serial killers to continue his murder spree for well over a decade.

As previously reported by The Blast, the first season of "Monster" was a viewing sensation for Netflix. The true crime anthology series reached 1 billion viewing hours in the first 60 days of its launch. It became only the third series to reach that milestone for the streamer following "Squid Game" and "Stranger Things 4." Thus far, only four series have reached that milestone in Netflix history.

Hot off the heels of the viewership success, Netflix was quick to pick up the show for two more anthology series, one of which will be the aforementioned Menendez season. Netflix also stated that the streamer has "exclusive access" to Lyle and Erik Menendez for an upcoming documentary feature.

Murphy and Brennan both executive produce the anthology show. More details on casting and additional writers and producers on "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" will be revealed later on. The show will stream exclusively on Netflix in 2024.
